What’s the word on later versions of the A Bolt & II series?

I had an early version A Bolt (non Boss) in 7RM that was pretty accurate with 150gr NOS BT’s and 4350 that went by the wayside years ago. It had a penchant for going past the detent/stop on the bolt if you cycled a little too vigorously.

Worth sourcing one or move up to the X Bolt platform?

Edited

I’m typically a Rem 700 guy, but also a Wby VG2 convert as well.

The new X Bolts are all LR orientated. Long barrels an funky stocks ..

I just sold my LH abolt II , proberly shouldn't have but a young keen hunter was looking an I have enough guns per say..
I like the Abolt II design.

I see big wood bucks now have a AB3 custom with short barrel a nice wood stock an peeps with fibre optic tip.

I like the feel of the Abolt stock-
What I didn't like was the weight in the Bolt itself....

I think they are great rifles. It is not my first pick in a heavy kicking rifle, but in a standard rifle they are great.

When the X bolts first came out I shouldered a few and they just didn’t feel right. I have never revisited them.

I love them personally !! Better than the X bolts !
I've had the stainless A-Bolts...both, I's and II's since they were introduced. Had 7 of them here at one point. Couple for my kids and several for moi.. lol
My goto for 20+ years is my Stainless A-B II / Boss in 300 WSM ! Boss system works awesome. Dialed in to 0.6...it'll shoot 1/2 moa @ 100 yds.
Love that thing...so does my son. He calls it "his lucky gun" ;) He will inherit it...much to his liking.

Also still have one here in 243...got it for my daughter, but, life changes. Kids appear stuff gets shifted to the back burner for several yrs. It's only ever had the barrel break in done, plus a 5 shot sight in prior to hunting season...but, it's never been hunted with.

Why do you say move up to the X-Bolt?

Just an aside, the AB3 despite the name is not a new iteration of the A-Bolt. It’s a completely different entry level rifle, but Browning likes confusing nomenclature. Implying it is some new A-Bolt has connotations of quality.
It’s not on the level of the X-Bolt and A-Bolt.
This needs to be said as the AB3 likes to sneak into discussions about the A-Bolt vs X-Bolt with its fake ID.

The A-Bolt and A-Bolt II are essentially the same rifle with a few minor differences. They were great rifles and, generally, shot extremely well. I built a 25-06 on a stainless A-Bolt II years ago and my brother has used a stainless A-bolt 30-06 for years as his main rifle.

Just seems natural to include it in the discussion is all

And yes, I’ve seen a few ads whereby its listed as an A Bolt, but their pics clearly show AB3 on the side of the barrel and still wanting ABolt/II prices.

I prefer my x-bolt over my A-Bolt I/II or 3 the recoil pad isn’t for everyone but there is others available with a more original A-Bolt feel stock in hand feel similar minus the nostalgia and a few ounces I’m not a huge fan of the ab3 the upgrade to xbolt is very noticeable with most features on the gun and I’m sure you could find a deal with new x-bolt2 out and everywhere if you don’t mind the non modular stock
