A Cheap Diet for an Old Enfield

It's a gray area though, that's for sure... I would say just don't let anyone inspecting see the insert and you don't have to worry.

It is different from your shotgun example though in that in the case of the Shotgun it's already registered as a firearm whereas in this case your Enfield isn't. Semantics I know but I would hate for the government to take that neat little thing away from you!

How did you make it BTW? I don't have any metalworking tools but would love to hear a step by step for future reference! :D
 
Honestly - I just dremelled down a Numrich 20 gauge insert to snider size and cut a little area for a pick to extract the empty.

The insert is easily removable - almost as easy as pumping a shotgun which is why I used the blue locktite - merely to hold it in place. I doubt a removable insert actually changes the caliber of the firearm.

I would agree it might be seen by some as a gray area - the few opinions posted here serve that end - but much more of a light gray than a dark gray.

It is just as above - a "temporary" conversion.
 
Never mind the .22, I have a Snyder and I would love to find a chamber insert with a slide in barrel to convert it to something like .303 British. :D

It's too bad a lot of this neat stuff doesn't get made... and the people who make neat stuff are always impossible to deal with.

I would gladly register this firearm if I could find a full-length barrel .22 conversion that would be "permanent".
 
I think this is fine fix, and it might actually shoot better than minute of inflated condom. Don't be surprised when you fire it first - shot will be sufficiently muffled. Short insert 22 barrel makes pretty much any ammo subsonic and long outer barrel of huge diameter provides volume for gases to expand.

I think the essence of this was lost in translation.

These inserts are made for other firearms. I don't expect anything too radical - although the point about the slow bullet is well taken.

The condom comment was most vexing. Let me make it clear to everyone on the board that the only thing I intend to insert into this gun is ammunition.

+2, as let me tell yah I'm not looking forward to having to try making/reloading .577 Snyder. :D

The Snider action isn't nearly strong enough to hold together for too many shots with the 303 british. It would be improvident to attemp this.

I once had Ace make me a 10" .45 acp insert for a 12 gauge shotgun- it was great. He does nice work.

Why not. Brass is available as are bullet molds.
And I believe Lee does have dies

Think of the .577 as a .22 on steroids and the cases are much easier for big fingers to pick up.
 
ya get a handful of brass and make the big booms!! You shouldn't even need dies as long as the brass will fit in the gun the first time.

Punch out the primer with any hand depriming tool and reprime with a dowel and hammer. Throw in a couple scoops of black powder and push in a bullet or miniball. I had a 50-70 and only 10 brass so I would reload every target.

He loads for Snider. You can buy fully loaded rounds. I assume you can send him back the brass for reloading.
