A couple of Cooey Repeater issues

I've acquired a Cooey Repeater (precurser to the Model 60) and am pleasantly surprised at how well it shoots. I am experiencing two small issues however:

1. After loading the magazine, the removable mag tube does not always re-insert. Its as if the plunger is jamming or binding in the mag tube opening. A few tries and some wiggling and it goes in.

2. When feeding the first round from the magazine, the cartridge sits too low in the extractor claws and does not line up with the breech opening, causing it to jam. Subsequent rounds feed fine when racking the bolt. Its just the first one that hangs up.

None of these are dirty gun issues; I've thoroughly cleaned and de-gunked the rifle from muzzle to butt-plate. Any suggestions?

Can't help you with #1.

As for #2, I have an idea...check it out. Most mags have little tabs to hold the rounds in on either side at the top. Could they be bent down a little too much? Can you bend them up a little to raise the top round a bit to allow it to feed better?

Just an idea...
 
Its a tube mag.

I had a Hiawatha (model 60) that had the same issue. Mine was caused be wear to the feed ramp. When I would insert the rounds in the tube the action of me inserting the mag tube follower in place would cause the first round to be forced out of correct alignment.

If I wasnt too forcefull it wouldnt happen and it never seemed to happen with shorts, so it became my favorite CB short rifle.
 
# 1 I think is the magazine tube bumping the the rims on. The bullets as its inserted, I would check and see if the inner edge of the spring tube is out of round,flattened, has a burr.
#2 is the bullet wiggling in the extractor? If so it needs to be adjusted, if not I would adjust the piece that forces the round into the extractor a little higher
 
These were made between '31, '39. I have one, and am always happy with how well it shoots.

Investigate all the great preceding advice.

I hate to suggest you shouldn't utilize this rifle to it's full potential, but have you done a round count when you load it? It may be an easy solution to put one less rd. in. Less tension from the mag tube might solve both issues at once. Seems kind of like cheating though...

Yes, a very nice little rifle with finer lines (wood) than the Model 60. I'm looking forward this winter bringing the beauty back to the walnut.

No I didn't count rounds, but I was only putting in 5 LR's or 10 shorts. BTW, what are the maximum round capacities?
 
I've taken mine down to see what's what...

On top of the advice presented above, issue #2 may also be from improper tension on the nut/bolt combo that retains your mag tube (also used as the take-down screw). All manner of troubles stem from this issue. I adjust tension by moving the mag tube by hand (not using the bolt handle). If it's too loose, the cartridge lifter won't lift high enough, too tight and everything binds. Few issues in between too...
 
My model 60 takes a little wiggling too . I just thought it was the nature of the beast . The more I shoot it , the less it does that . When I bought it the thing was as tight as a new rifle and it's really not much of an issue for me .
