I just got these add on bolt knobs recently and I figured while I still have this business membership on CGN with decent photo hosting arrangements, I may as well crank out an article/review.

So with my many clients are the beginning / entry level of PR matches, many of them would like a bit of leverage for large muscle motor skills in order to manipulate that bolt handle quickly and deliberately. Half the fun of being a Match Director and RSO is laughing at people fumbling the bolt operation and then causing misfeeds (read: operator error) while I’m yelling, “Shoot faster!” During the Match 60, “Save the Hostage”

I have a couple of suggestions beyond the usual $40 KRG Bolt knob from CGN sponsors like Go Big Tactical... No need for me to elaborate on that polymer knob that’s specific to Remmy M700 bolt handles. And of course platforms like Tikka and Savage are already ahead of the learning curve, since many aftermarket extended/tactical bolt knobs/handles are out there on the internet. :)

For your perusal, I have the MDT Rem 700 Bolt knob $39 and the little known off shore G&G Varminting bolt knob.

In the picture above, I’ve got the MDT bolt knob on the cement floor laid out in the component parts. 2 halves of moulded resin/polymer that can be screwed together and a polymer barrel that click/snaps over the screwed / fastened/secured halves. Remember that this M700 knob is specific to this platform and cannot be fitted to my other Ruger American Ranch 5.56mm AR Magazine (which I just sold last week to help pay for my son’s KRG XRay 455 CZ chassis). Yes, MDT sells models JUST for the Rem M700 and the Ruger American bolt handle.

You can see what comes with the MDT kit, the 2 halves of polymer. Inside a ziploc parts bag is the pair of screws to secure the 2 halves around the factory bolt knob. MDT also includes a synthetic pad/washer type of insulation to ‘fill’ in the void spaces inside the 2 halves.

At the bottom of this picture on the MDT green card background is the barrel that snaps/clicks over the 2 secured halves (around the knob). Notice it’s close to the G&G Varminting unit. I kept the 2 of them close so you can compare sizes; almost identical and that’s good to feel and see.

Here is the (above picture) G&G unit slightly unscrewed as it’s installed on the Rem M700 knob. Understand that this unit from South Africa started out at about $80 AUSSIE bucks plus mailing from Down Under at close to $30 AUS. The G&G unit is NOT specific to any brand / maker/rifle platform. It can be installed on ANY rifle bolt knob and that’s the appeal for me to try.... and of course show to my beginning shooters.

Let’s see if we can highlight the components (2 of them) which are the tapered threaded collar and the surrounding (female) threaded barrel to draw up and into the tapered (male) threaded collar.

You can Youtube search a video on the G&G Varminting bolt knob... that’s where I first learned about this product and then was able to source in from Aussie Land. :)

The G&G Varminting unit is made of aluminum that’s anodized black. Nice finish, I might add. The vendor in Sydney, Australia is: Global Industries Australia and their eBay handle is: globalindustriesaus

Or.... Here’s their eBay link:

This last picture shows that cutout present interfacing with the bolt knob handle. It straddles the knob and the user can position the gap facing forward and facing rearward. Your call. I happen to like that opening to the rear and out of the way of my index finger on the rearward bolt stroke.

Conclusions:

For those of you who run a Remmy M700, then you have these many options: KRG Bolt knob, MDT bolt knob, and the more expensive G&G Varminting.

Personally, I’m keeping all of them handy because I can also use the G&G unit for my CZ455 / 457 in a pinch. Well lucky for us the CZ457 knob can be replaced (M6 x 1 thread I believe) with an Area 419 bolt knob. But I still want to have that option.

The MDT bolt knob like the KRG polymer knob is great for the Remmy platform BUT the G&G unit can be used for all the other brands AND on a non-permanent arrangement (cheaper I must say).

Or you could always spring for a Kelbly or Surgeon 591 or ARC Nucleus or Defiant or BAT custom action and they offer these chances to attach a bolt knob of your choice , but you knew that already.

These bolt knobs are for the beginners who are not yet experienced enough to develop their own opinions/biases/feelings, etc.

Stay strong and Stay safe! Buy it cheap and stack it deep during these challenging times. :runaway:

Peace Be To Journey!

Cheers, Barney

Nice write up. I used to run the krg knob when I had Remingtons. It worked and felt good. I just put the MDT on a howa I'm building up. I like the design but my only complaint is its almost a little too big. It touches my trigger finger when in my firing position. I'll see how it feels at the range

Good report. I cringed when I first saw that the knob is an outer fitting, but after reading, I understand how it works.

Clamp on Barney... NOT strap on Laugh2

Just kidding, enjoyed the write up and hoping I get to spend time with you at Pet this fall (my hope is already gone for this summer...)

When I installed the MDT version, I had my reservations, mostly because of the aesthetics. But I have to admit that once I was at the range, the ergonomics far outweighed the look of the thing. Cycling of the action became just that much easier.

I was looking at the G&G awhile back and then again last week when it popped up on a YouTube video of an Auzzie shooter. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR6jQ7mXz6zZx3DtCMzKWxQ

What did all those AUS dollars convert in to CAN dollars and did that include taxes and duties?

I'm looking for my Weatherby Vanguard that sits in a MDT chassis, thinking about trying the MDT knob but it would need some mods though someone in the comments section on MDT's site mentioned using one on there Weatherby but just not what mods they did.

While I'm on here I should thank you for your recommendation on a scope awhile back, the fixed 10x Bushnell, it's been great.
If I can hijack your thread a bit, I'm on a budget and am wondering what your thoughts are on the Magpul bipod and using a sling mount system vs other attachments?

If your intent is to have a reasonably light package, the Magpul bipod will likely suit just fine. It is no frills and different from say Harris but similarly capable. On a LSS chassis, which is catered towards light/handy package (in the chassis spectrum), this works to keep weight down. A swivel mount simply means you save need for another attachment form but sacrifices the swivel.

The advantage of a picatinny mount would be relative ease of on/off, on an ARCA even more so with additional flexibility of different positions.

Thanks a whole bunch. You saved me a pile of typing…. There are many, many good bipod brands out there.Cruise the PR/ PRS forums and see what others recommend. I’m totally biased and not always in the correct direction.
