A factory Remington with a short chamber, am I dreaming?

So I recently bought the RCBS precision MIC cartridge headspace tooll for my m14 and it came with a handy dandy tool to find the lands. I tought I'd never use it but since I have a 308 bolt gun I figured I'd give it a try.

Well, I'm following the instructions alright and I performed the test a couple times with always the same reading: 2,798'' Is this even possible? I had tried the redneck methods for finding the lands with never much success because the readings were erratic. At that time I just came to the conclusion the lands are not even reachable with 155gr Palma's!

I am skeptic of this reading, what do you think?


EDIT: heheh jumped it too fast, I forgot the measuring tool is flat, not pointy like a bullet, doesn't give an adequate OAL lenght (just tells you how to adjust your seater)! LOL

Factory throats are indeed very long. I could not mag feed with 178 Amax's in a Remington or a Tikka, and still be at the lands.

Perhaps you can get an accurate comparison using the lands measuring tool in combination with a comparator.

Get a comparator. It's easy to use. I've done it with cleaning rods too, and gotten reasonably accurate readings, but the correct tool makes it a lot easier to do. - dan

I have a Rem 700P LTR in .223 that has short throat. I can shoot the 70gr Bergers with tons of room. I could shoot the 90's in it from the mag but the 9 twist would not stabilize them.

As long as it falls inside SAAMI specs or their lawyer's, anything is possible.

If it has a short throat, you would be bumping into the lands, you mean it has a long throat. Right? - dan

I confirm the tool did measure around 2,800'' but it gives a seating depth about 2,973'' with 168 SMK... just a couple thou into the case
