Stark reminder of more trying times... Too bad the punks who tagged all those places can't appreciate the all the hard work and sacrifices!

Great pics and thanks for posting. When I was there the guide said the statue of the Soviet soldier with his hand extended downwards was to symbolize a fallen and beaten down Germany...................but in reality the fellow could not raise his hand due to all the stolen watches he was wearing.

We lived in Berlin for three years in the early 80's when I was in the British Military Mission to the Soviet Forces in Germany - BRIXMIS. There was LOT more visible damage back then.

I was mainly in Mitte the whole area is turning very trendy and everything is being torn down or refaced

I did hit up a construction site I spoke with a few workers and they did find a bunch of stuff ammo various personal equipment and broken guns the week before but they claimed to have turned it all in...????

I was in Berlin, seven or eight years back, and there were still some areas near the wall that were fenced off with rubble inside. The real owners, or heirs, couldn't be traced, so the lots were still vacant.

I was quite astonished by how open and un developed they left the capital area there! Its like the Mall in Washington DC or Warsaw Poland.

To go along with the OPs pics of the trip I suggest folks read The Fall of Berlin 1945 by Antony Beevor, he also wrote the book Stalingrad, another good read.

It's interesting...graffiti, of course every army back until the dawn of recorded history left their mark. Roman Legionnaires left their mark on the Pyramids and wherever else they went. "Kilroy was here!"

Thanks for posting!

Any interesting museums or tours?

last 4 are the Reichstag inside parliament and of the dome from the inside and outside the dome has a long ramp you can walk up great views of the city you MUST book months in advance to enter the Reichstag and even that depends on security and parliment
