A few EoTech Q's?

I'm new to electronic optics and have a few questions for EoTech users.
1. What's the difference between the 512 and the 552? is it just the NV capability? I only need a basic sight, nothing super fancy.
2. How do these tighten to the rail? Some I'v seen seem to be flat on the side and tighten with a flush allen screw, others seem to have different size (from slim to huge) screws sticking out the side. Is it a generation thing? It seems petty but even though I really like the sights, a half inch long knob sticking out the side of my AR is kind of a turn off.
3. I'm gonna assume batteries can be changed without taking the sight off the gun too?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, but I'll probably look into used as well as new and want to know what to expect.

The only difference between those two models are the NV capability. As for the mount, it comes with an exposed knob and a flush Allen head that you prefer.

I also forgot to mention, yes the batteries can be changed without removing the sight. You simply lift a lever and the battery pack pops off, you replace the AA batteries, put the pack back into position, and press the lever down. The ease of changing batteries is one of the reasons I went with the Eotech.

I believe all the 55- (551, 552, 553, etc.) and EXP3- sights are NV-capable. The only real difference in the different EOTech models is the battery type, configuration (the EXPS and XPS series have a transverse configuration which reduces the footprint significantly), and battery life. EOTechs aren't known for their battery life, particularly compared to Aimpoints but the newer ones are far superior to the older series (<100 hours for older models, 600-800 for the 553 and EXPS/XPS IIRC).
