I would like to start reloading for my .223 Savage 12BVSS. I've never reloaded before, and my reloading knowledge is limited. I was just given an older Lyman press, but that's all the equipment I have so far.
Does it matter what kind of dies I get? Will these do, and should I also order the factory crimp die?
Where can I get Lee trimmer "kit" that is shown in this thread?
It seems that 75gr Amax bullets with varget is very popular for the savage 12, so I would like to try that. But what kind of primers should I get for that load?
Does anyone have any other loads that work well in their savage 12?

Thanks

I just started reloading myself. I have loaded my .223 with 75gr hornaday match bullets and 22grains of 3031.the small rifle primers are used. I do not crimp as I use a mauser style savage 12fvss and find it unnecessary to crimp.

the dies I prefer are RCBS dies.. and they normally fit all 15/16 threads on a reloader press. The trim kit you will only need after several reloads of your brass and can be gotten from SIR or any outlet selling reloading supplies. I have a hand one but mechanized ones are available. there are many things that can be added to your reloading arsenal but main thing is caution a nd reading instructions carefully....saftey first...

i shoot out to 1000 yards with my gun with pleasing results.

Start by buying a manual(Lyman. Not that you must have the same book as the press. The Lyman book is just extremely versatile.) and reading it. RCBS has an online how-to as well. It's under 'Reloading Guide'.
A copy of The ABC's of Reloading wouldn't hurt either. I suspect Shooter's Choice, on Colby Dr, in Waterloo will have both. You can talk to them about the other equipment too.
Have a look at what comes with an RCBS Beginner's Kit. You will need more than just dies and a shell holder.
Any set of dies will do as long as the press has 7/8-14 threads. You don't really need to crimp. Regular small rifle primers will be dandy.

Dies are like cars, some people like Fords some like Chevy. Nothing wrong with Lee dies, myself I like Redding dies(pricey).
A case trimmer is nice to have, no need to go with something like a Gracey or Giraurd to start with, Honady and RCBS make inexpensive ones.
Buy 2-3 reloading manuals and read them cover to cover. The maunals will give you an idea on what other tools you will need. Like a deburring tool, calipers, and powder thrower to name a few.
I always use match primers so Federal 205 match is my go to primer.
Varget works well in .223. There may be better choices but because most of my reloading is for .308, Varget works in both. Something between 25-26 gr would be a good starting load.

I just bought the ABCs of reloading. Ordered it from Chapters for around 20.00. Did that on a monday it was in my mailbox on a wednesday.

As far a content goes. The internet can tell you about 70% of what is in that book. The best chapter in there in my opinion was the first one. The one dealing with safety.
