Howdy Gun Nutz! I'm a 29-year old public servant from Ottawa who recently got bit by the gun bug. I've always wanted to do some target shooting but, until recently, I thought obtaining a licence was next to impossible... When I realized how easy it is (relatively speaking), I signed up for the CFSC and CRFSC, took the (highly enjoyable and informative) courses, passed the tests, got my certificate in the mail, filled out the form, sent it out to the RCMP and, just yesterday, got my PAL in the mail... all in under three months!

... I gotta admit this is still feeling a little surreal, so I thought I'd sign up to this neat-looking forum to cover some of the bases.

Looking forward to chatting with you all!!

To use the Jonestown, Guyana metaphor, don't drink the Koolaid!

There are many shooting opportunities in the Ottawa area - target rifle, military surplus, shotgun, bullseye pistol, IPSC pistol and plenty of hunting. The trick will be to connect with the appropriate bunch of people who have those passions. CGN is a good place to learn and meet those people.

Welcome aboard, I'm a Silly servant as well working in the big grey complex in Hull.

Welcome, Cerdan, and thanks for your comments about gun safety and hunting courses. Even if unnecessary, ineffective, and unjustifiably expensive registration regulations go away, licensing and training provisions are here to stay. It's refreshing to hear someone remind us all (especially those who are just thinking about taking up the sport) that all of this is FUN!!! Even the courses and the exams are fun, if you are sincerely interested and appreciate the opportunity to learn a little about the toys you're going to be playing with.

Thanks everyone! Happy to see I'm not the only PS on these boards, heh.

What area of the sport interests you most?
I'm mostly drawn to target shooting, rifles and pistols both. I guess becoming a marksman would be my main interest and goal. The safety course instructor also mentioned action shooting, a sport he's most skilled in, and that sounded like a lot of fun. It's definitely something I'll consider some time down the line.

Absolutely! I remember thinking, on the way home at the end of the weekend-long course, that I didn't remember the last time I'd learnt so much in so little time. You get a bit of everything, history, chemistry, mechanics, optics, law... Hell, even the whole harrowing section on cartridge types and calibres, with the conversions and the total arbitrary weirdness of it all, was fascinating! We were lucky to have a great instructor, too; one of those rare people who are able to convey subject matter with the right combination of seriousness and tomfoolery. We had a blast!

Welcome to the forum Cerdan...

From a fellow Ottawa resident and a newbie to this board, welcome to the world of guns friend! :) Do you have any guns now? Will you be looking to buy one anytime soon? What cal and config? I shoot, low-key, small arms, small game bores myself. An old 22 rimfire, bolt action repeater and a model #84 single shot, 410, both Cooey. They've been with me since I was 16, many years ago. ;) I've eaten my fair share of wild game meat because of these two pea shooters over the last four decades and was wondering if you are going to be shooting flesh or cardboard in your future?:)

Have a good one...
