A frustrating moment but overall awesome night.

I was in my favourite spot tonight and the deer were coming out. As usual they came out at the opposite end from where I set up but things were moving. I had 12 year old junior with me tonight and he has his very first deer tag in his pocket. A couple of does popped out and fed towards us. I had him line up with a good rest and when they were in range I said go for it. Boom went the muzzle loader but bullet and deer did not connect. I felt aweful for junior as this was his very first chance.:(

As we looked in vain for any sign ( clear miss but I walked him through the drill any way) we had a good talk and he took things in stride. We have a lot of season left and the field we are hunting is a real honey hole so I'm confident he'll have another crack at one.

I wish he had connected but the evening was still a great night for father and son.

Lord knows he's seen me miss more than once :D

I missed the deer the first shot i ever took with my shotgun when hunting. Dad was right beside me. Taught me a lot. Next chance I had I replayed everything that went wrong the time before, and it made me a better hunter.

Your son wont forget that moment, It will make him a better hunter, and who better to experience his first hunt with, his Ol' man.

Good luck this season.

Anytime spent with loved ones out hunting is a good thing, also if a person connected with a deer every time it would not be hunting, it would be killing.

He will most likely get another opportunity and when he does connect will have a better appreciation for it. imo

I have missed three deer.. I always aim higher or it deflects off the smalelst twig! After missing on opener Im AIMING LOWER! I have bad luck! This is the year though!

I know the feeling. Last year I missed a brute. He was very long and I figured I could hit him. Wrong ! If I had waited another ten minutes he would of fed to withing 100 yards. This year I took a shot with the bow and thwak I nailed a poplar tree. Sometimes it just seems to be a comedy of errors but I've learned that the key is persistance.

This year after the miss with the bow I took an overly long shot with my muzzle loader and missed again. That same evening I sat for the rest of legal time and a nice 5X5 stuck his nose out and he is in the freezer now. That is what I am hoping for with junior we'll keep at it till the season runs out or his tag gets filled. Either way I can't think of a better way to spend time.

the first thing i ever put my sights on was a beautiful 5'6 or 6' cinnamon coloured black bear, broad side at about 75 yards, was so nervous I flinched hard when i squeezed the trigger and missed by a mile, but the next bear I came across wasn't as lucky. It takes time and patience but its worth it when you see that "pink mist"
