"The gang" was out shooting the Wednesday night rifle league at BRRC last night. Out of twelve shooters on the relay there were three Savage Mark II BTVS's and a handful of BV's on the line. These rifles are taking over by storm!
One odd problem did pop up......Mid string, the BTVS shooter on my left had a sudden and catastrophic magazine failure.
Closing the bolt on a full 10-rd mag resulted in the magazine base plate popping off. Hard to describe, but the audio sound sequence of events was sort of:
Click
Piiiiing!
SPROING (followed by the sound of 10 rounds falling out bottom of mag onto the bench)
^%%$##!
Out of the corner of my eye, I see the commotion, including the mag-spring launched end-over-end down range at the target. Talk about having an alibi! How do you score that?
A quick check of the dozen-odd remaining Mark II mags on the line found only one other mag (stainless too) with a loose base plate. The runaway spring was recovered during a break in the shooting and the errant mag repaired. Still, if you've got a bunch of Mark II mags, you might just want to give them a quick check.
The evenings hilarity notwithstanding, I still manged to shoot 621/700...pretty hard to hold steady when you're laughing!
