On some previuos posts I had mentioned how a good friend who passed this Easter was messing with me during the bow season. Well I guess he finally let me off the hook. Yesterday was the opening of muzzle loader season so I was out in my blind for the evening. I had my son with me and the evening was progressing nicely and deer started moving around 5:00. The only problem was they were coming out at the opposite end of the field. I laughed and said to myself my old hunting buddy was still messing around with me. We stuck it out and in the last 20 minutes of legal shooting time a large deer steps out. I lasered him at 167 yards. He stepped out into the field and I took a good rest and boom. He walked about 20 yards and piled up. Hooray I thought and my son was just pumped to see the deer go down. But not so fast. Larry wasn't done with me yet. As I was walking over the dam thing got up and limped into the brush. ( A shoulder high jungle ). My son and I did our best but we ran out of light and found no blood at all. Needless to say that evening I was brooding a bit.
However, something was saying to get back there at first light so I arrived at my spot this morning. I was looking around when the landowners dog shows up to pay me a visit. The dog came with me into that jungle and started sniffing one particular deer trail. Bingo blood sign ! I marked the spot because there were about five different trails branching from that spot. After checking the third trail there he was about 50 yards down. The shot had been right in the boiler room and I still can't figure why he got up. However, he was in great shape and the yotes had not found him and the evening was cool. I broke him down with the gutless method as I did not want to open him up. The meat was cooled and in great shape. An hour later I was on my way home.
I think Larry sent that dog to help me out. I really miss my old partner because these situations were has biggest strength. He was the best tracker I've ever met.
This ones for you Larry. And please stop pissing around with me now
