I was just looking at the "which? 308 or 7mm08" thread.

Often I see people saying "there is a greater variety of factory ammo for..."

I know there are "gunnuz" who try this load and that load and try to find the bestest ammo for their particular rifle hunting different animals (most of these handload and don't just sort through the factory ammo avaible.)

But don't mostguys select a factory cartridge and see if it shoots decent in their rifle then hunt with it.

Do many people really have a 30/06 and use 110 grain factory for coyotes and 150 grain factory for deer and 180 gr. factory for moose?

If one is going to take their 7mm08 and load it with 150 gr. factory ammo and then hunt deer, elk, moose and black bear with it, who cares if the .308 has a "better selection of factory offerings"

I use 165s out of my ought six for everything... unless I ever get my G-Bear draw then I'll probably toss something a little heavier.

140 grain out of a 7mm_08 kills things just as dead as the 165's out of the ought six

I would probably agree, most of the guys I hunt with couldn't tell you what weight their bullets are. In fact, the two "luckiest" guys I know (bloody deer magnets, I tell ya:mad:) just use Win grey box, cheap, plentiful, minute of deer.

I'm the opposite. I rarely shoot factory ammo and I load my hunting rounds to try match my rifle's preference and to match the game I'm hunting. Availability of factory ammo is almost a moot point for me. I pack two separate containers of ammo on a hunting trip in case one is lost and I sometimes pack a spare rifle. I'm not afraid to hunt with wild cat cartridges in remote places and only rely on myself for providing ammo. However many guys don't load or don't care and they hunt with whatever is on the shelf. I do it because I enjoy it and it doesn't matter what you use as long as you get the results your after.

I have been shooting rifle and shotgun for 40+ yrs never shoot factory ammo ,I had reloaders before I owned guns as good as some of the factory ammo is today it is still inferior to a handload tailored for your particular rifle.

I so agree.... I don't reload... but have had guys tailor a round to my .223, .30-06 and yes... there was a difference.... that being said, the difference was in shooting not hunting.....

2 inches at 300 yards is a big difference when you are shooting... when hunting it is zip when the target is 8 inches wide.....

I aspire to learn to reload without a doubt.... but you can do just as well hunting with factory rounds....

I'm a range officer and spend a large part of my weekends on the shooting range and my experience is that most hunters use almost any kind of ammo on deer and it works but are far more selective for moose and caribou hunting.

I've never heard anyone talk about deer hunting while practicing with a 7 STW or a 338 Win Mag rifle and I've never heard anyone talking about moose hunting while practicing with a 243 Win or a 30-30 Win.

In fact, most hunters would probably own 1 rifle for each type of hunting that they do if it was not for the cost of locking up so much money in rifles. (Think of the cost of owning many quality rifles: a 22-250 varminter , a 270 deer rifle, a 338 Win Mag moose rifle and 7 STW long range caribou rifle).

Most hunters end up owning 1 quality 308, 270, 7 Rem Mag, or 30-06 rifle and choose ammo according to the game hunted.

Price:
308 $19-$23 for an average box.
7mm-08 $28 -$31 for the same.
308 has the option of cheap FMJ's for practice

Availability:
Any store will have 308. Many will not have 7mm-08 and if they do it usually is one brand and one load

Choice of load:
Federal 17 308 loads
for the 7mm-08 6 load only

What happens if you grab the one load at you local shop and it does not shoot decent? You are into searching for a mail order supply and crazy ammo shipping prices.

If you are the average guy that is not a serious gun nut then the 7mm-08 is not nearly as practical as the 308 so why bother with it?

"But don't mostguys select a factory cartridge and see if it shoots decent in their rifle then hunt with it."

You got it.
For every shooter who tries different brands in his rifle to see which one shoots the best, I'll bet there are twenty who just get a box of shells to fit their rifle.
On top of that, a great many don't specify what bullet weight they want. For example, if they have a 30-06, they will simply ask for a box of 30-06 shells.
This the clerks at the gun stores can handle, but it makes them think when someone asks for a box of 30-60 shells. Or, a box of 306.

H 4831 You are absolutely correct a person comes in the store asks for 30-06 then I have to ask Bullet weight brand ,,then they are not sure so I have to ask what they are hunting Its an ordeal and it happens very, very, often.
