A friend has just inherited a A.H. Fox 20Ga. SxS manufactured in 1926.
The blue is in great shape, has nice manufactures engraving and has a tight hinge action. Also has double triggers, extractors and barrel sellection switch.
Anyone know the value of these.
It's in very good condition, just needs some polishing.
Is there any good appraisers in the Toronto area I can send him to?
 
A.H. Fox guns came in many diff. grades, without knowing this it is impossible for me to stick my neck out, only to have some know-it-all diss my app. Low grades in "very good" condition should draw over $1000, for FE or DE grades multiply by 10, add 50% for 20 gauge!!! Fox was in business from 1903 to 1942 and taken over by savage in 1930.
 
your friend inherited a great piece of american history. Sure hope he keeps it to honor the person who left it to him. Nice to see talk about real shotguns, not "shotty's".
 
DO NOT "POLISH" THAT GUN! More fine old doubles have been destroyed with a buffing wheel than by rust. If your friend's intent is to sell it, it will be worth more to the buyer in "unimproved" condition. Just wipe down the metal and run a patch or two through the bore, soaked with a good cleaner/lubricator like G-96 and go over the wood with a light furniture polish. Be gentle with the old girl.
 
Fox grades are marked on the gun.

A Fox, if indeed made in 1926, with factory engraving will not be a Sterlingworth, it will be a graded gun. The grade will be stamped on the water table (A, B, C, etc.) An appraiser will not be needed, these guns trade on a regular basis and a perusal of auction results, such as those posted on the Doublegunshop.com BBS, will get you close to the value. Grade and condition is everything.

An experienced gunsmith should look the gun over for faults or potential problems, but a well cared for Fox will have few areas of concern.

Longwalker is spot on with his advice - monkeying with the finish is a sure way to reduce the value of the gun.

I've bugged my friend to take some pictures. He says he'll try to get some to me later tonight. I should have taken some myself last night when I was over there checking it out.
I know one thing for sure: it’s a graded Fox, NOT a Sterlingworth. I’m pretty sure it’s a grade A (which I beleive to be the lowest grade) but it’s definitely an original and a graded one.
The stock has a few scratches, however the barrels are in very good to excellent condition. The engraving is flawless.
I'll post pics as soon as I get them.
By the way This FOX will be for sale soon. But not by me. My friend is not a member here, as well he has little interest in shooting.
If anyone wants contact with him, All I can do is pass on your info. What he does about, is out of my hands.
All I'm trying to do is get some info for him.

I'm working on my friend to get detailed pictures. The red tape of registeration and ownership is going to take time.
Thanks for all the input I have gotten. Any contact info that I have been sent, has been forwarded to the owner. What he does with it is up to him.
If all the pieces fall into place, we hope to transfer the gun into my name ,then he or I will contact people in order.
By the way the ball park figures so far ( without a lic'd appraisal ) is $1800 to $2500.
Don't take that as the low and high. After it's been looked at by a couple collectors the price will be set.
