A.I.C.S: Any reason not to buy a 700 SPS?

I'm about to go off and buy a long action remington 700 for my A.I.C.S. - is there any reason not to just buy the cheapest 700 I can, since I'm going to be dropping it into a different stock anyway? I know if I bought a more expensive rifle I could probably sell the stock to someone... but I know myself - I'd probably never get around to posting it forsale anyway.

So... is there any real difference in the actions of the various 700's?

dak.

cheaper guns have something cheap in them to make them cheap if you do get a heavy tactical or varmit barrel model as i beleave the acis is ment for heavy barrels

The SPS varmint is the same action/barrel as the 700P, the only differance is the flat black on the V and the P is parkerized and the P is test fired for accuracy at the factory becuase it is LE. That is what I was told by Remington just last week.

A.I.C.S. = accuracy international chassis system. It's just an aftermarket stock.

I've got the long action version, and I'll be putting in a 7mm remington mag reciever into it.

I'm not looking for fancy, just functional. The SPS is 610$ and the police model is around 1100$. If you removed the stock from both, is the police model 500$ more accurate and reliable then the SPS?

That's basically what I'm getting at. Is there any real benefit to spending more money on a more expensive 700 when I'll be throwing the stock out anyway?

:)

ben, I doubt that the bolt on your VLS is lapped (unless a smith did it) - the VS, P, VLS, and SPS all come off the same tooling. The main difference (cost wise) is the finish and stock. As for accuracy, I doubt that a Police barrelled action is any more accurate then a VS barrelled action, the stocks will definitely give an edge (i.e. HS Precision vs Laminate vs plain old wood) in accuracy hence why you pay more for the HS series rifles as opposed to the plain jane woodstocked series.
DKAARDAL: Just buy an SPS and get your rifle into the AICS and you will be laughing.

Im building an M24 on aSPS long action.Im going to have everything lapped when the new barrel goes on anyways.I would go with the SPS and spend the money you saved on a real nice barrel when you can afford it.Good luck.Dave.

I have 2 sps, a .300 win mag, That shoots great, i was dusting clay pigeons @ 300 yards today and I can shoot an honest 1.5 group @ 200yards with it, and all I have done is had the trigger redone.
The second is a .223 that I bought second hand today, and so far so good,
but the trigger (like my .300) needs to be worked on.

The stock is not the nicest, but I bought the guns to hunt with and I dont care how they look, they fit me well.

Hope this helps.

what you need is only the action, paying more the better stock on 700P is not worth it. get SPS, throw away the stock and barrel(or sell it :D). put a nice custom barrel on it.

If its the new trigger on the SPS then may have to dremel out a wee bit of the triger well on the AICS.

it took me literally about 5 minutes to do.
If you dont do this you wont be ablt to use it at all...it will just be a big ole club....a cool club but still just a club

I bought a SPS in 30-06 as my wife's hunting rig. It was on special for 599$, this included a hard case, a 3x9 Hawkes scope with rings and a one piece base. The scope turned out to be a piece of crap so it was refunded and upgraded for a Bushnell Elite 3200. The trigger was really bad (about 10-12 lbs with lots of creep) but this was easily fixed. The point is this gun is now a real "tacker" and has no problem shooting 100 yard groups that vary between 3/4" and 1 1/4" with Remington factory ammo. My 2000$ Sako rig does only slightly better than that!!!

Excellent - I really appreciate all the help. I'll pick up an SPS next week and drop it into the stock.

:)

Just wondering...are you planning on a custom build, or simply planning on taking the stock SPS and dropping it into an AICS stock? If you buy a standard hunting contour bbl. SPS it isn't going to look right. The SPS Varmint or Tactical will look much better; however, no matter which SPS model you purchase you'll be paying more than twice that for a new AICS stock.

I picked up the stock and bipod a while back, so that's not a real problem. You make a good point about the barrel however... I'll have to give that some thought.

There are a number of makers of quality barrels in Canada, just as there are also good gunsmiths who could install one for you. Better expect to pay a minimum of $500, probably more.
Another possibility would be to try to locate a take-off Remington factory barrel. One from a Sendero might work out.
If your barrelled action is a 7mm Magnum, that will limit your calibre choices to the larger rounds.

You might not have to give $500 for a barrel, but by the time you get it chambered and on the rifle you will. But you'll have a way better than stock barrel.

See if you can get a 7mm blank from Ted Gaillard and have a good LR smith (like HWMNBN) chamber and screw it onto your action. Even get it chemically blackened (looks really good) too.

You're going to spend a whack of money shooting and tinkering. The outlay for a good barrel and gunsmithing is insignificant.
