A little coyote hunting this winter,

both should be similar in pelt damage, of course that all depends on the bullet. A 17 cal would be the most fur friendly, like Rotax said, or a 204 with some bullets, some of the time (from what ive read). 243 works well...but aint fur friendly on broadside shots! 55 or 70 gr nosler bt's work awesome for anchoring them though
 
"...a 243 but thought I would look for a 22-250 or maybe 223..." Hide damage with any of those depends on the bullet used. Varmint bullets out of them will make big holes in the hide. Commercial FMJ's will not. A commercial fmj is not the same as a milsurp fmj bullet. They have thinner jackets and are made for hide hunting.

Found that commercial FMJ's with 22-250 rifles loaded to higher velocity to be somewhat fur destructive unless loaded down to 2700-3k max. Have seen these slugs to make wild turns in yotes some times making 90 degree turns and exiting through the back, chest or butt hole. Milsurp FMJ's have a more ridgid construction. Have had luck shooting match bullets on yotes as they seem to be less frangible than varmint slugs, made for punching paper I guess. Just my 2 cents worth.

I have a 22-250 and found little damage with 40 vmax loaded down (a lot) to about 3450 but found wind drift has been extreme. I have a bunch of Barnes Varmit Grenades loaded up but have yet to try them on a yote. I will let everyone know how they work if I get a chance.
 
I know a guy who used to use FMJ's for coyotes, but gave up the ghost due to run-aways, bullet goes right through, no energy transmission from bullet to animal. Now berger 50 gr match bullets, they are engineered to be deadly accurate, as well as deadly.....deadly! Given the similarity to the berger VLD's with a smaller diameter extended hollow point that allows for max penetration into the animal, then the bullet absolutely explodes, allowing for maximum energy transfer!

223 if you do your part so will it, also love the 218 bee, usually shoot 55gr fmj over a healthy does of powder. 22 250 is a litle to destructive for me as I hunt for revenue and hate sewing 17 a wee bit to tiny for my liking. Slow and steady wins the game.
