I stumbled across this chopped up barrel yesterday while looking for something else.
We coated parts of it with gun kote flat black, baked it, rubbed the barrel with a car key, then threw it in a bucket of salt water and left it there for 2 weeks.
It's been wrapped up in a t-shirt in my unheated garage for over a year.

Here is a close up. The line on the barrel is where we rubbed it with a car key. No rust...

This is rugged stuff. :)

I think I understand that you meant: "Did the rusted areas get coated?"

I believe the answer is no, you can see some definite lines where the coating is.

Now that you repeated it...
No, I masked off the area that is rusted before I blasted it, then remasked it before I painted the area that is coated.
The rusty parts are what's left of the original finish.

ah but how tight was it wrapped in a T Shirt? Alot of the corrosion occurs during the cycling between wet and dry..with exposure to air and other elements..

i have rifles that have been gun koted for ove 3 years. couple marks like the key mark on a barrel or edge here or there but DEFINATELY NO signs of rust anywheres.

It wasn't wrapped to tight. It's been over a year since I've seen it so I can't say for sure that there is or isn't any more rust on it now.
I'm thinking about redoing it and leaving it outside all winter.

If you leave it outside during the winter, you should put it somewhere close to where the plow would push the snow off the road.

That way it would be getting a crap load of road salt at the same time.

Humm..maybe wire it to the frame of my truck.....;)
