A Little Puzzled by Ontario Hunting Regs....

I like to hunt the hayfields and woodlots around my home for coyote with my .270, but am having a little difficulty understanding some of the "small game" regs. It reads that when bear season opens on the 15th, the fact that I only have a small game license means I can't carry anything bigger than a .22LR. Am I reading this properly? Do they really want me hunting Coyotes with a .22? If I buy a bear sticker (complete waste of money in this unit) can I hunt with my .270?

If your allowed to hunt bears in your area with centrefire rifles, then yes. If you have a bear tag you can continue to hunt coyote. (not allowed in my area since centerfire rifles can't be used on big game)

Otherwise, I think your correct. You can't hunt small game during an open gun season for big game with anything more than a .22
 
you need a tag.

As far as I know and understand in a bow only area you would be allowed because you can't hunt bear with a rifle in that case. Thus you being out with a rifle means your not hunting bear but something else.

If you can hunt with a rifle, then you hunting coyote could be misconstrued as bear hunting and if you have no tag you can't shoot a bear thus they can get you for hunting without a license/tag or whatever.

Buy a tag and you can go out with any caliber you want so long as your not in those little gun counties.
 
Big game, including black bears, may only be hunted
with a firearm (this includes bows). If you are hunting
deer or moose at the same time you are hunting black bears,
you may only use or carry (on your person, in a vehicle or
boat) a firearm of the type permitted for deer or moose, as
the case may be, at that time in that WMU.
Specifications on the firearms, bows, bolts and arrows that are
permitted when hunting black bear can be found on page 22.

calibre or projectile power than a .22 calibre rim-fire rifle

Is there a bear season in your area?
 
BTW, while I have never tested it, I think a .22 is more than capable of taking a yote....Just don't be irresponsible about it.

regs as you posted after state GUN season.

many people confuse gun with firearm. According to the MNR a rock is a firearm, anything that can wound or kill an animal is a firearm according to the act.

In a bow only season for big game (no big game of any kind gun season open) you do not need a tag for said big game to hunt coyote with a rifle.

If there is an open GUN season for any big game where you are hunting you need a tag for it in order to go out with a rifle even if your just chasing coyotes.

Firearm = rifle, shotgun, ML, crossbow, bow, spear etc.

Gun = ML, rifle and shotgun.

Just trying to avoid confusion between GUN and FIREARM. I know this isn't specific to your situation but I think it's clear enough to understand what your case is.

A rock is not a firearm.

According to the Fish and Wildlife act of Ontario a pellet gun is a firearm. Even if it only shoots at 100 fps.

From the horses mouth: “firearm” includes an air gun, pellet gun, bow or crossbow; (“arme à feu”)

To the firearms act a firearm is a gun. Pellet gun included (over 500fps) but that seems to be at the judges discretion.


Can you show me where a pair of scisors or a pencil is a deadly weapon???

I could justify my statement but it would take this thread off course. Look at most other threads where cops and guns are involved... I'm sure you can figure it out. I ain't pickin' a fight (specially online, typing and expressions/tone etc. don't mix too well) over our country's legal system and it's definitions versus it's actions.


As to the OP, did u get ur answer?

I would not want to get stopped by a CO during a shotgun-only hunt carrying a rifle...
 
if you got a bear tag no.

same as if your hunting deer and there's a moose season open. In 65 (where I am) you pretty well can't get a moose seal unless you is real real lucky. You can hunt deer with a shotgun here when moose season is open and don't need a tag for moose (can't really get one anyways) so long as you got your deer tags (that said I don't even know when the hell moose season is here lol. no need I guess, bow only no tags lol not for me).

If you got a bear tag an you only intend on hunting bear (lets say you are actually hunting bear in this case) there's no need to buy a deer tag for nothing (specially if you have no intention whatsoever of hunting deer). Would be a waste of money and a scam on MNRs part. I know a bunch a guys that go deer hunting and don't get bear tags .... same damn thing.

All the regs say is you need a license to hunt deer, moose or bear as the case may be. No AND in there so 1 tag for something big means go.

A little OT but...moose in WMU 65 is the 1st full week of Oct....and they actually shut down the bow-season for deer while the bow-moose season is open...:(

Total :bsFlag:, to shut down the bow-deer hunt for all of 65 for the sake of 25 bull, 25 cow tags...which are mostly harvested in Larose Forest.

Still OT ... ya then the larose is divided into little parcels by the township and you can't hunt the whole thing lol.
