Has anyone used A-Max bullets for hunting.I have a couple of boxes of 105 grn A-Max that I thought I would try in my 243 on smallish Blacktail deer(Island Deer)I cannot find any data on expansion of A-Max bullets.Graham

could work, might not. too risky.

might as well use a bullet designed for hunting game. A-Max's are match target bullets. Ive tried MatchKings on coyotes and wolves with dismal results (107 gr. 6.5mm).

Best to stick with a hunting bullet IMO regardless of accuracy.

I contacted Hornady a couple of years ago about this very question. What I was told was that the A-Max bullets are not designed for big game.

They lack the ability to penetrate reliably and tend to expand very rapidly (causing a superficial wound) due to a large pocket of air that exists behind the plastic tip. The guy I spoke to said that you may try a 180 grain .308 cal A-Max on "small deer", but a far better choice is the SST or Interlock.

So, you may want to save your A-Max bullets for targets or varmints (if you don't mind violent bullet expansion), but use a hunting bullet for game.

It's never hard for Hornady to tell what you are interested in when it comes to their products. During the 1998 hunting season, their mailbox started filling up, their phone began to ring off the hook, and the email inbox was stuffed with the same basic question: "Are your A-Max bullets a good choice for deer"?
The short answer is: "Yes, A-Max bullets will effectively kill deer, and they produce devastating results." Now, for the long answer.
As you probably already know. A-Max bullets were designed to be used as match bullets. As a result of their match bullet origins, the A-Max bullets have a relatively thin jacket. On deer type game, the thin-jacket design works very well in creating a devastating wound because it results in rapid expansion on impact with the deer.
The A-Max, however, may not give you the depth of penetration that bullets like an Interlock traditionally deliver. That makes the A-Max an extremely poor choice for large, thick-skinned game such as elk.
The bottom line is this: For deer hunter, the A-Max delivers match grade accuracy with very rapid, killing expansion. For larger game, though, the A-Max will not create adequate penetration to be effective.

The amax is not all that fragile. Just shoot some milk jugs and phone books and compare with reg. hunting bullets. The big issue is how fast will that bullet be going when it hits something. The slower it arrives, the better this bullet will work.

Forget about penetration if velocity is above 2900fps. SPLATT> But around 2000 to 2500fps, should work really well. In fact, work better then reg. bullets at these velocities. The slower you go, the more 'fragile' a bullet you need to do the same thing on game.

Used to shoot alot of 155gr Amax out of a 308. At 2850fps, they blew through 5/16" steel gongs at 385yds. For broadside presentations, I am sure that it would break the skin :D

Will find out how 7mm 162gr Amax do at longish ranges out of a 7RM in a few weeks, I hope.

Sierra basically claims the same thing about Matchkings, " these are match bullets NOT designed for hunting" an awful lot of longrange hunters use them very successfully. I personally do not use Amaxs for hunting and got the same response as Azone did a few years ago, and have not followed up since, extremely good chance of shooting my deer this year with an Amax however, there are not many choices available for my 50 BMG that are legal hunting bullets here.

50 BMG on DEER.Well I guess you dont have to cleen out the guts.Graham
Actually there is not enough animal to effect any bullet expansion, so a broadside shot gives you 1/2 inch holes both sides, the real trick is to be sure no other deer is standing behind the 1 you shoot, or a guy could get more critters than he has tags for.
