I bought an old 12 for a fix up project, I’m trying to strip it all down, there’s a couple of on line videos about taking it apart but I can’t find anything that tells me how to separate the mag tube from the forearm. It slides back and forth but won’t slide out of the handle. I’m guessing the spaner nut has to be removed from the pump handle first? Also there’s is no indication on the barrel as to chamber length, just full choke, i’m assuming its 2 3/4 but were any of these only 2 1/2? It’s 1929 production.

If it’s a 12 ga . it will be 2 3/4 “ you need a wrench to take off the nut that holds the forend wood on . If it has never been off good luck with that

Ya I hear it can be Next to impossible to get loose, and if the mess I found inside the receiver is any indication, I’m guessing it may never have been off

Get a piece of wood.
Cut a hole in it the diam of the mag tube.
I got two pieces of metal that fit the slots in the steel threaded cap that sandwiches the handle onto the slide. Actually if I remember I believe it was two pennies I cut to shape with a dremel!

Then hammered them hard diametrically opposed into either side of the hole cut in the wood. Protruding into the hole.
Slip it over the tube. Engage the metal pieces into the slots in the cap. Lock the tube down and twist.

The threads are very fine on that thing. Give it some penetrating oil first and let it soak in.

They sell a tool for it but it's like 60 bucks if you can find one. Forget that noise. Intelligence overcomes obstacle and the soviet approach is best comrade!

ya that sounds good ,thanks. i soaked it with wd40 penetrating crap yesterday , i'll try and make up your described jig. you'd think with a couple million of those mod 12's made there might be an easier way , theoretically the guns nearly useless , at least not restoreable if you cant separate those pieces or find a donor gun that comes apart.

lol There is.
But like I said they're like 80 bucks if you can even find them.
Fudds hold onto them like they're some kind of rare asteroid rock or something. It's just a small custom spanner wrench....
If you really aren't too particular about the condition or shape of the old beast, you could always use a small punch in the slot at a sharp angle and give it a good counter clockwise tap to break it loose. Then you can just spin it off.
The downside to this method is you may mangle the cap slot a bit. If you can find a good smaller brass punch that method would work just as well and not even welt the steel as the brass will give first.
Lock the slide assembly down good and solid and give it a good tap.
