So I've been working a lot out of town and had this last long weekend off.
The girl decides she wants to go for a drive and maybe shoot some grouse which surprises me because she doesn't hunt
Sunday morning we leave at 0800 and head for the South Canol road in hopes of a few grouse. I decide to pack a rifle just in case we see a moose.
Seeing as I spent 8 days in late September hunting moose and bungling a perfect opportunity to shoot one I don't exactly have high hopes.
So we're driving up the road at 1030ish and I'm telling her I've only ever seen 2 moose in this area during hunting season. Not 30 seconds later we come over a small hill and there's 2 bulls standing about 200m ahead and 20m left of the road.
I stop and get out and now the bulls are on the right side exactly 215 feet.
One shot from the 300 H&H and down he goes.
Drag out my tow chains and rope and have exactly 1 foot left over to tie to the hitch. Easiest moose I ever shot.
So I start cutting the moose up and she asks if I need a hand? I figured she was just being polite so I told her it was no big deal. A couple hours into it she comes over and asks if she could help and I say "sure, why not".
Now she's tugging on the hide, skinning it, sticking her fingers in the bullet hole and having a grand old time.
After the meat was quartered and in the truck she grabs a knife and wanders over to the gut pile and starts cutting stuff open, and she is absolutely loving it
.
So on the ride home she's telling me it was the first time she's ever seen an animal cut up and now she starts thinking maybe she would like to go hunting with me sometime. You could of knocked me over with a feather
The next day we hung the meat up and washed it and put game bags on it and again she's out there like a dirty shirt helping again.
So I get to work Tuesday morning and find out I'm not leaving until tomorrow so I book the day off and wander down to the local gun emporium thinking I'll pick her up a Rem 700 in 7-08 or some other moose capable cartridge.
I'm talking to the gun guy and he says why not a Ruger 77 Compact in 260. I didn't see any but he had one in the back and brought it out.
Now I'm a die hard 700 fan but this little Ruger is cute.
I mounted a mini Pentax 3-9 and bought some dies, brass, and bullets and I'm off shortly to get a bow for the little rifle.
So hopefully next year I'll have some more photos of a moose taken with the cute little Ruger
