Got this neat old Enfield from an old uncle - said a native gave it to him years ago. Has a funky red recoil pad on it. ..... Anyways, seeing as it is already sporterized, I asked my buddy Billy to drill and tap it for a scope for me.... Billy runs a gunsmith business out of his basement. Doesn't do too bad work, and sometimes I can trade him some drywalling for his gunsmith work. Anyways, I'm picking it up tomorrow and was wondering if you guys think I should try handloading for it or not....

Does it have a two leaf folding rear sight on the breech of the barrel? Does it say EAL on the left of the receiver?

Here is what the sight looks like.... or at least what it used to look like. I don't know if Billy had to mess with it to get the scope mount on. He is supposed to be done with it tomorrow.

As tiriaq is alluding to in his response, it is an EAL Enfield, military issue. I hope your kidding about the drilling. There were only about 1200 or so military EALs, and about 300 of those were still in the CF a few years ago and as such are destined for the smelter. They are worth between $400-600, and somewhat underpriced at that.

I asked my buddy Billy to drill and tap it for a scope for me....
methinks I smell a hoax (I hope)

My monitor really leaves a lot to be desired; can't make out much detail. Let's see: Red Jostam recoil pad, military pattern rear swivel, sporter style buttstock, with gentle pistol grip, No. 4 action, heavily modified with charger bridge removed, left sidewall cut down, 5 shot magazine, 2 leaf rear sight on barrel breech, sporter style forend (not cut down military), front swivel is military pattern secured w/2 screws, ramp front sight base, front sight secured with dovetail block and screw.
IF the rifle has all these features, its not a sported Lee Enfield, its a military pattern rifle set up by EAL in the 50s, issued to SAR Techs, and more recently Canadian Rangers. If you had it drilled and tapped, I really hope that it isn't the rifle that I suspect that it is.

OK Guys....you got me. Early April Fools! :D Yes this is a nice military EAL.....don't worry, I won't give it to "Billy!!"

It is quite a nice rifle actually.

Phew, I was scared for a minute! Sad thing is, things like this get done to collectible rifles. Worst one I have seen was a single shot .222, nice conversion, professional workmanship, restocked, cut down receiver, based on a 1931 troop trials No. 4.

I'm sending you the bill for my laundry!

Seriously, these are scarce enough that I'm glad somebody pointed this out; I would never have known, otherwise.

Thanx for the pics, thanx also to tiriaq and stencollector.

Well I've never seen one or know much about them. Hopefully, I'll see RobP's at the range...

Wanna play hooky some day? 8) Actually we could talk about work and call it marketing?

I've bought three, 2 civilian and one military. Most people don't recognise what they are and sell them as sporterised enfields, which I guess is what they technically are. They actually represent another manufacturer of military firearms in Canada. (or at least used to be) although using someone else to produce many of the components.

I actually felt a little sick there while I was reading your post.
OFF TOPIC NOTICE :D

I was a bit sick the other day. While at the gunsmith, he was drilling and tapping for scope mounts a 1947 Savage 99 in MINT condition. All blueing was still in place as well as the case colouring on the lever.

SC..................
