I have a ten year old grand daughter, when she was eight she asked to be taken out when we hunted, so we have done so the last two seasons. This year I introduced her to the safe handling and use of my over / under .410. We went for grouse yesterday but didn’t harvest any. She practiced on our property and enjoyed shooting it, her smile was huge. She knew she couldn’t harvest any and has to wait till 2024 to actually shoot any. We walked, cut a couple of Christmas trees ( I have great spruce on the property), hunted then I took her for lunch in the nearby small town (Smoky Lake, Alberta). One of the best days I’ve had in years, her smile was worth more than I can say.
In the last three years I’ve also introduced two friends in their fifties to hunting, a husband and wife duo who introduced their son and daughter in law to it this year, the four of them took two moose and three mule deer this season. They are hooked, I honestly believe the more people we bring into the sport the better chance we have of the sport continuing.
