Here is some pics of a new SKS-D that I have acquired. Comparing to my other D, I immediately noticed a few differences.

The gas tube is shorter. The barrel is also 0.5" shorter. No bayonet lug, and this was not ground off(looks factory, cnc machined). Stock also has no cut out for bayonet.

The front ferrule also seems in a different place, now the stock is super tight and doesnt fit properly in the rear on this stock.

Overall fit and finish are the same. My question to all the SKS-D gurus, how many variations is there? These are the only two I have examined closely and was surprised. I know of the later D's with the mag release that looks much like the regular sks but never seen these differences before.

mine was a tad shorter in the gas tube and barrel than my factory 306 military, but its ferrule is a little too far back on mine. Mine has the cleaning rod tensioner and a bayonet channel (blade bayo) My stock looks like yours on top but with the barrelled action of your bottom one. It also looks like the gas block and front sight base are not as far back as they should be. It looks like the D's were pieced together out of whatever parts were on hand.

i had a "D" that also had a shorter gas tube .

these two have regular size tubes but in the pic it looks different sizes. i have sold these .

i will be using your pic in the chinese sks sticky ... thanks

The guns that have the bayonet mount milled off were originally to be shipped to America , but "Bill" cut norinco guns from being importable to the US. So the SKS-D's were sent to Canada instead. Some of them have the California importers markings on the receiver. Mine have these markings.

"Sounds like typical elitist comments to me

its pretty obvious that the rifle is manufactured differently, and not just out of spec"

Sorry Man;

I am a tool and die maker. I spend many days fixing Chinese machinery. Most parts don't match the blueprint they were made from. Many times spare parts from the same box don't even match each other (or the print).

Yes, I am a little jaded.

Look at the differences in the stocks: rear sling swivel location; the slope from the magazine well to the front handguard; and the swell of the handguard to the front ferrule. These are indeed different guns.

Taking this discussion up a level and to pick up a comment about differences in Chinese machinery, I am reminded of an account of how the British were building tanks early in WWII. The crews that built Valentine tanks handbuilt each one. The holes for the bolts on one's running boards or stowage bins would be in a different place than the next one off the line. The workparties were reading the drawings, assembling the parts and then walking up to their work assignment and 'doing it their way'. The mass produced interchangeable parts used on the M4 Sherman were revolutionary compared to British production practises.

stick to your tool and die making cos this has nothing to do with quality control, OP said its half inch shorter, they are not interchangeable.

the shorter tube was made mostly for the SKS-M sporter , most came with a 16" barrel.

yes, the above was a later production 2002 and the bottom was 1995.
