A Pleasant Afternoon on the Bench

So today was absolutely gorgeous, sun shining, shirt sleeve weather, light to no wind, a perfect day for shooting and chronographing...........and so I did, for 5 hrs pretty much non stop this afternoon. I am now almost exhausted, 5 hours of shooting groups is a lot of work and concentration. Anyway I had a few revelations today, first was that the 22-284 did NOT work in the 1-12 twist barrel at all, could not even hit the back board.........but that one is on the other thread specific to that rifle and cartridge.
My 6mm-284 I found does not like 107 gn Berger VLDs and also would not hit the backboard.............So I tried it on a box at 50 mtrs and low and behold.........well it's pretty obvious what's going on. When I bought this rifle it was a 243 and I assumed, seeing as it was on a Remington action it was a 1-9, however it obviously is not and is likely a 1-10 barrel and even possibly a 1-12........Guess I'll have to try some lighter shorter bullets in it or change out the barrel for another I have in 243 and chamber it out to 6-284.

I also worked with a BSA Schtutzen 243 full stock and it went fair, I was trying 95 gn Nosler BTs and got a couple loose groups around an inch but nothing really exciting. I suspect it too may have a 1-10 barrel and shall try some 80-90 grn bullets to see if it shoots any better.

Next up was my 25-06 which has been f**king me around for well over a year and a half now, outstanding velocities with 4 or 5 different bullets and 4 or 5 different powders but nothing consistently under 2 inches..........today was no exception, one group about 1 1/4" but the next one was back out to around 2"..........Today was 110 Nosler ABs and RL 23 and IMR 7828...........it's never terrible but it's never great..........1 1/2" - 2" - 2 1/2" consistently but never MOA, and if I do accidentally shoot a MOA group it will never repeat it........

My Sako Safari 338 was also on the menu today. It turned in a fair performance but didn't really meet my expectations, velocities were very, very good but groups ran around 1 1/2" to 2" with 225 Nosler ABs and IMR 4350 powder. My last 3 increases in powder made virtually no increase in velocity so that tells me that I have "hit the wall" with IMR 4350..........However the last three charges all went right around or just shy of 3000 fps. Primers are all good and no ejector marks, just a slight resistance on bolt lift so I know I'm not over pressured..........just not burning the 4350 anymore.........Gonna try H 4350 to see if there is any difference and it's supposed to be less temp sensitive. I also have some RL 17 loads made up and we'll see where these go....in a few days. It is such a nice fitting rifle that it is pleasant to shoot even with 225s at 3000 fps.......it's a pussy cat.

I'm a little sore as I also fireformed 30 pretty much full house loads in my 458 Ruger wildcat, want to get the brass formed up for load testing and get that 40* shoulder nice and sharp for headspace duty, so there is no waffling around with test loads. Anyway it beat me up a bit, not used to it after the winter off from shooting.

Are you making the 458 brass out of 300 win or did you go with hornady cases? What kind of velocity and bullet weights are you after with it?

Actually Slimbo I made my cases from 416 Rem cases of which I have 500. In 458s I only use 500 gn bullets as if and when I use this cartridge it will be against the biggest and toughest the planet has to offer. My expectations are to equal or better the 458 Lott, I have a slight capacity edge on the Lott and should be able to get 2350-2400 fps from 500 gnrs. My rifle has a 24" tube right now, so these velocities should be very realistic. After initial testing and working up loads, I may decide to cut it down to 21 or 22 " and install a banded front sight from Brownells, if I decide to keep it. Velocity loss with cartridges of such high expansion ratios are minimal with a reduction in barrel length, losing 2 or 3" of barrel length with a cartridge like this will only drop about 30-50 fps. More than enough left to deal with Monsieur Elephant or Heir Rhino.........

Awesome! I can see why a guy would get sore after a day of testing loads in that beast. This one is also a Remington 700 correct?

Yep, it started life as a 700 Custom Shop 458 Win Mag..........I wasn't testing loads for this girl, I was just fireforming brass. However even after 30 rounds of fairly stiff loads with 400 gn Barnes Originals and 535 gn cast lead bullets I ended up pretty beat up. Plus a bunch of hot 338 225 grnrs and a whole bunch of smaller stuff............the effect seems to be somewhat cumulative, I'm pretty stiff and sore tonight. Certainly won't be doing a return engagement anytime real soon................

Forgive my ignorance as I've never loaded anything but correct headstamped brass. Do you neck the 416 brass up before fireforming with .458 bullets, or were the 400 grain Barnes originals .416? Is the 416 rem case full h&h length, or could you fire it in the 458 ruger chamber just like you did with factory 300 win in the 375 ruger?

Slimbo.........Ignorance and the admission of it are no sin, and no forgiveness required.......

Yes I do neck it up and cut it off and fireform with 458 bullets. I have lots of cast 458 bullets but only real expensive 416 bullets, so I don't fireform from 416. Actually making brass for this rifle is a lot more convoluted than that, in order to get a proper headspace for fireforming. I trim it long and flare the case mouth slightly and jam this case mouth up against the end of the neck in the chamber.......same as what happens when you don't trim brass and load it 10 times, only on purpose this time. I also seat the cast 535 gn bullet out so that it is jamming onto the lands......more tension can't hurt right......Then with the case all charged up with 3031 (I think, would have to check my data) I pull the trigger......It kicks the snot out of me and makes a perfectly formed case .......every time.

Now I could use any number of cases to do this but having 500 X 416 Rem cases and no 416 Rem chambered rifle......well the choice was pretty obvious. It is also an experiment to see how much abuse the Rem nickel cases will hold up to, as these are all nickel. So far I have been impressed as no flaking or peeling what so ever, and they seem to form just as good as straight brass cases, nice sharp 40* shoulders. I guess we'll see how they do after a few firings.
