A potentially dumb question regarding Dragunov Rifles ?

I've never had a SKS -nor have I ever had any interest in owning one.

Seems there are a lot of guys now a days taking the barrel & actions off an SKS and transplanting them on to an aftermarket stock/forearm to make them appear Dragunov(ish).

Are Dragunovs Prohib in Canada or just hard to come by ?

Prohib. Liberals squinted hard and decided it's an AK variant. Just like the PKM, which is very clearly NOT an AK...

Red rfiles obviously are not in my forte of knowledge but even I can't see how its lineage in is similar to an AK variant.

Well, thats lame... had some $$ left over from tax return and bonus season, and I've thought for years of maybe ckecking one out.
Guess that explains why some guys are trying to make their SKS look like one.

Thanks,

Mike

It seems like there're no 7.62 DMR battle rifles left available these days at all .. except maybe a scoped Garand?

I have two East German Dragunov rifles complete with all the kit
With the very long barrel and different bolt system from an AK47, there only crime is looking like an AK47, even the calibre is different 7.62x54

Interesting... so basically a bolt action receiver that has the same footprint as the Dragunov stock (and accepts the same barrel) ?

What appeals mostly to me about Dragunov is its aesthetics (its a very ###y looking rifle) and not so much that it is semi-auto.

I wonder if anyone did an accuracy test of it.. I had a SVT and it shot pretty good using iron sights but I couldn't get the replica scope mount to fit properly. It was pretty tight in the rails but at the same time it wobbled side to side and so did the POI. May be a side plate for a POSP would be a better option but it is a destructive change to the rifle.

Soviets actually used SVT as a sniper/DMR weapon during WW2. About 50k total were hand-selected, accurized, and equipped with a PU scope.

As to why Dragunov is prohibited - there's no logic to that. Mechanically, it is very different from AK. Although hey, they just prohibited the poor Chiappa M4 (.22LR FFS) only because it looks like a certain duck.

I've fired, disassembled, and cleaned AK variants and PKMs but not Dragunovs. The PKM is even less of an AK than a Dragunov but it's also listed as an "AK variant" prohib. Fires from open bolt, feeds from a belt, full-auto only. The only similarity to an AK is the country of origin LOL.

That's right, I wonder if regular SVTs that we have floating around can demonstrate DMR accuracy. Also, SVTs destroy brass because of their fluted chamber :( so we are pretty much limited to Norinco and Barnaul ammo and they are not exactly match grade..

They prohibited a bolt action shotgun as an AR-15 variant last year..

I believe there is a civilian cousin of the Drag that is legal but very rare and expensive . Its full wood ..... i might be wrong

I got to handle and shoot a Dragunov in Petawawa during the Reagan years. The Green Berets used to cross train the CAR. Mind you it was just one weekend when the prying eyes of the rest of the brigade were elsewhere.
It was okay. Just a DMR rifle.
Kind of like an FN-FAL with a scope and proper scope mount. Not the dust cover POS scope mount we had for the FNC1.

There is no logic to any prohibited by name class so no point in trying to make sense of that. Basically the Dragunov is prohibited and people are trying to make firearms with a similar feel because they want what they can’t have.
