I am think about threading my Remington 5R barrel to 5/8 24 UNEF for a muzzle brake. Instead of making a sleeve for when the muzzle brake can't be used are there any rules or detriments to making a simple flash eliminator (if only for cool factor)?

I have though about the clamp on style muzzle brakes but the tip of the 5R barrel is slightly tapered and that worries me.

5/8 is the standard thread for AR10/308 brakes and flash hiders.. so there are plenty of factory options.. however a thread protector made to the same profile as you barrel isnt a bad idea if there are instances were you arent able(allowed?) to use a brake

Do you mean 5/8 x 24 UNF, not extra fine. NF and EF aren't the same IIRC.
I wouldn't trust the clamp on unless the brake ID taper was exactly the same as barrel taper.
I use a simple thread protector when not using the brake on a bull barrel but harmonics are different thus POI is somewhat different..
