There isn't a bigger piece of crap on the market than the mini-14.......
Poorly finished, made up of cast parts, absolute worst operating system I have ever seen....the op rod runs on a sheet metal insert in the stock  and the psiton vents inside the forestock, on top of all that they don't shoot worth crap either.
The happiest day in a Mini14 owners life is when he sells it. Mine was......
As long as you're not expecting AR-15 accuracy out of them, I don't think they're too bad at all. I've owned three, and can't say I was disappointed with any of them. For the ranges and uses you'd be expecting to use these rifles, I don't see anything wrong with them. And, if you ever have a chance to play with the AC-556 (semi-3-shot burst-full), they're a howl to shoot.
I've had one of each, Ranch & non-Ranch [and a Mini-30, too]. All were extremely reliable. Accuracy was iffy. Best for any was around 2" - 3" at 100 yards. Don't own any of them now. They were an okay deal when they went for around $400-$500 but for the cost of a new Mini-14 [$750]today I'd double it, get an AR-15 and have the accuracy. Just my .02...
Well, I bought a modified mini with hart 1 in 8 and 20 inch barrel and internals were also polished and a few parts changed. It shoots 1/2 inchers at 100 with fed goldmatch.... The trigger is about 2 lbs
IMHO, can't do better than that for unrestricted and reliable semi-auto 223.
Best coyote rifle I own. I made a double last weekend . could not have done that with my much loved S&W 1500 in 223...
