A question about the Remington 700 VTR ATACS

The VTR has a heavier barrel than the standard 700. Its a unique triangular shape to supposedly add stiffness and cooling, while keeping the weight down. At least those are the press release claims. Other 700's like the tactical have a more conventional heavy round barrel. My pick would be something with a fluted heavy bbl.
Any .308 will take a deer down. If you plan on hunting mostly from a fixed location you may want the heavy barrel because it will be more accurate. If you are going to be stalking then I would go for the regular 700 so you don't have to lug around the extra weight. You will also save $$$. A fluted barrel is a good choice because you get the best of both worlds. Now that advice goes out the window if you also want to get into precision target shooting.
They are the same caliber and move the same projectile.
I think they went with the term Varmit for the .223 and .308 in that barrel as it is a bit heavier for the plinker/varmiter and the caliber is friendlier for ammo costs being there is more surplus in those calibers and cheap enough for reloaders.
You couldnt go shooting deer with them every weekend (legally) so thats where I think the term varmiter vs. hunter comes from. Should be a good coyote gun or plinker, and personally I really like the look of the triangular barrel and top of barrel venting.
