I want to fab a reactive shotgun target similar to the ones I've seen that pop a clay in the air when the gong is knocked down. I haven't seen one up close, do they pop it up with just gravity, or do they trip a spring loaded mechanism of some sort?

It's a siple teeter-totter design. falling plate lands on a hinged armature that lifts ot flips the clay into the air...

I built half a dozen a few years back and they use an 8" square of 3/8" thick steel plate for the activator. The arms that the activation plate pivot on are about 12" long. If I can I remember to get some pics I will post them, as they are a lot more compact than the one pictured. The height of the "can toss" can be increased by adding weight to the back of the activation plate. The whole works is mounted to a 16" lenght of 6" wide channel iron.
