A question regarding 12 gauge single shot shotguns

Hello everyone,
As my handle suggests it I am very new to shooting/hunting. I am thinking about buying, sometime in the next few months, a shotgun for hunting birds (partridge, grouse, geese etc.) and perhaps rabbits.
What is a good bore gauge for the purpose? Is 12 gauge a good choice?
The other question would be about single shots: would a single shot shotgun, such as H&R pardner, be a realistic choice for hunting? I don't mean necessarily that particular brand, but I am giving it as an example of the shotgun I am talking about. Would a single shotgun be a realistic hunting gun or does it have to have a capacity of more than just one in order to be effective for hunting?
PS. On a side note, if it matters, I live in the Southern Ontario.
 
You are going to get a tonne of answers so I guess I will start.

I would look at a 12guage pump combo. Good value to cover many tasks. Rifled barrel for deer, longer smooth barrel for bird and small game. I would be looking at a rem870 or mossberg 500. Both very well made and reliable. That said a single shot would cover what you are asking about.

A light single shot 12 gauge is probably not the best for goose hunting, in terms of capacity and recoil mitigation.
It's going to hurt.
A pump 12 is an excellent choice for nearly everything you list. But do you want to carry a heavy gun around all day chasing small game? That is a personal determinate.
 
For the sake of cost and that you're just starting out. Like the good folks above me, go with a pump. It can do everything you want it to and you can go practise with it at your local trap/skeet range.
One thing to remember is that if you choose to hunt migratory birds you will need to shoot non-toxic shot, and the most economical is steel shot. Steel shot isn't recommended to use in full fixed choke shotguns. So you may want to look into one that accepts choke tubes...you can find them pretty cheap on the EE.

I was in the same boat as you. I wanted something that could be used for multi purpose, and not break the bank. I ended up with a Winchester SXP Camp/Field combo. Cost me 434$ all in and comes with 2 barrel(18,26) and 3 chokes. Should be able to do hunting, trap, and just target shooting with slugs with ease.
 
A Remington pump or m8sburg pump would be a much better choice. You can add barrle as need for very little money. Then you would have a gum that could do it all. Lots of guys hunt deer moose and bears with a 12g slug. For under 500$ you can get a two barrle combo.
