Earlier this year I sold my
P226 Legion when I picked up my West German P226. I'm more of a breadth vs. depth guy when it comes to my collection—I usually don't have more than one of each model. I like the Legion line very much, and really, really wanted to get a Legion 10mm—it's all-steel plus has a longer 5" barrel. However, I saw this .45 version for sale at a CGN sponsor in used but what looked to be good shape I couldn’t wait and went for it...although I must admit I still might want a 10mm. When it arrived it was in even better shape than I expected—it may even be unfired.

I've owned six P226s over the years but this is my first P220. The single-stack grip size is just about perfect for my small hands—it's a bit bigger around than a 1911 but significantly less than a P226 of course. The grip shape is also subtly different—angled a bit more. I really like it. Since we're limited to ten-round mags I'm only giving up two rounds, too (although the mags that came with the pistol have a very robust baseplate that I’m not crazy about).

I think my favourite Legion features are the sights, the grips and the trigger pull. They're night sights, but the front has a bright green dot while the rears only have the tritium vials. In daylight the front sight really pops! The grips have really nice texturing—three different patterns—and provide excellent grip without being too aggressive. The medium-reach trigger fits me better than SIG's short-reach trigger, which I find too short in SA mode, but the trigger's best feature is a super-short reset. My P226's reset was adjustable—I'll have to check to see if this one is.

Other things I like are the undercut at the rear of the trigger guard, allowing a higher grip, and the checkering on the frontstrap. It's not all improvements, though—for some reason SIG chose to install a noticeably smaller decocking lever and slide stop. On a full-size pistol this seems an odd choice. Some users have seen finish wear, too, although mine will see little holster use. I'm looking forward to getting it out!

Nice, i have been looking at the 220 and there are a couple on the ee, i do t know the difference between all the different 220 models, the price range on the used ones seem to vary quite a bit! Is there a big difference between the regular 220 and the legion etc. The narrower grip would fit me better! I like the 1911 for that reason. We can get 10 round mags for the220 also!

Main differences are the sights (X-Ray3), Grips (Custom Hogue G10's) and depending on the legion model, potentially the trigger. I bought a standard 220 and did it up to functionally be a legion, though the cerakote is a slightly different colour.

Yeah, as thatguy67 mentions above the biggest differences are the sights, grips and especially the trigger. I’ll double check my P220, but my P226’s was adjustable for overtravel and was the best trigger I’ve had on any semi-auto, including some higher-end 1911s. There’s a larger beavertail, which is a bit smaller than the one one the Elite series one, but I find it’s superfluous on the pistol—I prefer the look of the standard one. There’s also a higher undercut on the triggerguard.

EDIT: I just checked and the P220 does have an overtravel adjustment. It’s dead simple, too.

Yours is in 10mm, right? That must be sweet!

That's correct! I have had a Glock 20 for my 10mm fix for quite a while. It's going to be leaving the safe for a new home at some point in the near future, the P220 handles 10mm so well. I'd imagine the 45 feels great in the Legion P220.

I'm a depth, not breadth guy. So perhaps a .45 will be in my future, ha.

Damn.....is that the one from the EE from a site sponsor ? So, you are the one who beat me to it :kickInTheNuts:

Well done......again Master. ( Bren Ten )

She is a beauty !

I had a chance to take the Legion to the range last week—what a great pistol! It was so pleasant to shoot—more recoil than my previous P226 Legion of course, but still very manageable. The trigger and excellent sights made accurate shooting almost effortless—here's the results of the first eight rounds through the pistol at 10m (about 33'). I've only been out handgun shooting one other time this year so I was very happy with the results. It's always satisfying to take a pistol out to the range and see it perform as well as you'd hoped.

What a great looking 220! I’ll be picking up my first Sig in the form of a used P220 Combat on Tuesday... can’t wait for paperwork to arrive so I can get it out to the range! Hope you’re still enjoying yours!

On a side topic, I’m trying really hard to source grips for the 220 in Canada. Would anyone have any suggestions or tips? I’ve been scouring the Internet, but nobody seems to be selling p220 grips!

Thanks all...

OP,
Purchase & install a Gray Guns dual adjustable trigger lever of curved or straight configuration will change the take up & over travel.

I have all 7 models of the SIG P220 R 5 10mm's.
Awesome pistols

The recoil spring needs to be upgraded as not to launch brass into a low orbit, like any SIG P series pistol.

One can NOT purchase the purple-ish color coded twisted wire recoil spring from SIG USA,you'll have to purchase the complete assembly.

I've inquired to Sprinco in TX to manufacture one of their renound dual spring recoil systems for the 5" SIG's.....still waiting after a few years now.

The already has overtravel-adjustable Grayguns P-SAIT trigger factory-installed...it has a great trigger pull that doesn’t need changing. I’ve not noticed any issues with ejection with the factory recoil spring—maybe the 10mm version needs the upgrade but mine is fine.
