How long must you know somebody before you can use them as a reference? I’m assuming its 5 but I’ve also been told 4 years and 3 years. I have not been able to find an accurate answer. Perhaps somebody has recently has gotten there PAL and knows?

Thanks so much.

doesn't the form say it? i think it was 1 year, but it should be written exactly on the form.

np. i was actually reading the form yesterday and saw it, so i know it was there. all i remembered was that the timeframe wasn't excessively long, so it's relatively easy to select a handful of references. not like they're asking for 10+ year stuff (thankfully).

Yeah three years, but for your passport its only two, I guess they really want to make sure

yeah, but on the flip side the passport reference & picture signing person has to be of a certain "caliber", so it can't be a random neighbour or a buddy at work.

I always thought that was weird too! My passport references where an Engineer and a Doctor! Not so my RPAL refs.

That's outdated. as long as they have known you for 10 years and hold a valid passport, anyone can be your guarantor now.

Where does the 3 years leave me if I have only been landed in Canada for 3 months?
Do the references need to be Canadian citizens or can I use UK references?

This form here should be able to help you
http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/form-formulaire/pdfs/921-eng.pdf

"A reference is anyone who has known you for at least three (3) years and is at least 18 years old. However, he or she CANNOT BE your current conjugal partner."

It also has boxes to fill in for a different county, so yes, you are probably able to use references from the UK.

Just an update on my own personal status, I just got off the phone with the RCMP giving a personal interview and a reference for a friend :)

OK, thanks for that. To get landed here, I had to have a police check from the UK, so I think (if I have read the other posts correctly), I can use this as the 'letter of good conduct on the police departments official letter head paper', and then use references from the UK. How the CFC/RCMP will contact them I am not sure.

They will contact them the same way the contact other police departments, probably by phone ;).

References need to have known you for 3 years. The photo guarantor only has to have known you for at least one year and CAN be one of your references.
