A reasonably priced semi-auto?

Hi folks:

Pretty much a newbie here.. was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent quality semi-auto that won't break the bank?

So far, I've heard the Mossberg 935 is ok (but some mixed reviews) and the Stoeger (same)..

I would be willing to find a decent used one, for sure. I have a Benelli Nova pump in great condition that I bought new in Nov 2009 but it's a limiting gun; one 28" smoothbore barrel that's a good all-around gun but not the best if I want to target specific game.. Deer barrels are ridiculously expensive for the Benelli. I wish I would have bought some sort of a 2 or 3 barrel combo as I seem to be mostly hunting turkey and deer these days with the odd grouse or rabbit hunt mixed in for good measure.

I want to be able to mount a scope on both the turkey and deer barrel..

Thanks for any help!

Give the H&R Excell Auto a try perhaps?

455$ at Le Baron's for the combo which gets you a 24" rifled barrel (with fibre sights) and a 28" smoothbore barrel. Plus four chokes.

I've never tried their semi's but I have several H&R singles and have been nothing but satisfied with them. Under rated company IMO.

Or there's the old standby; Remington 1100, plenty of after market barrels available.

I got one for you for 450.00 its a smith and wesson comes with 5 chokes 2 pistons and a choke key i've only put 120rnds through it and in like new shape. it has a 28"bbl and a 3.5" chamber.

I don't know much about them.. I will do a search. I am looking to use it for deer and turkey so are rifled barrels and turkey barrels readily available for them and would they be expensive? Also is it tapped? I want to add a scope.

I was looking to get a combo package but I will certainly think about it...

Thanks

What would it cost to get a scope mount for this gun? And what about buying a turkey barrel, after market?

I think remington owns HR now so would I be able to use Rem components?

As in put an 1100 barrel on an Excell?

I seriously doubt it. Remington, Marlin and H&R may be all one company now but unless the parts were originally designed to be interchangeable, they won't be, 'cept by coincidence.

That said, I have seen Mossberg made barrels for Remington's around the 'net.

Scope mount? That depends if it's already drilled and tapped, if not (I don't think the Excell is) then you'll need to visit a smith. If it is then a rail is pretty cheap, I paid 20$ for one for my son's H&R .22lr. If you get a barrel with a cantilever mount, well it's just the cost of the scope then.

For the money, in my opinion you cannot find a better value then the Stoeger 2000. I'm on my second one, have ever only had one failure to fire and have shot many shoulders sore with one. From the factory they come with a good selection of choke tubes and they will accept any Beretta/Benelli Mobil-choke. You can buy a 2 barrel combo as well, though it gets pricier. The inertia (Benelli) operating system runs about as flawless as possible, and is easy to clean. No gasses are blowing through the action, so theres nothing to really gum up. I should probably get around to ripping mine apart and cleaning it one of these days, I just haven't had the need. ;)

As for the Mossberg, I can't really say anything about them as I've never fired one but many seem to love theirs. The only thing I can say is I find them a bit heavy. I have been thinking about one of those security model 930's though, and if I ever take the plunge I'm sure it will hold up fine.

SA-08 'nough said. I got one and absolutly love it. Totally reliable awesome balance light and all round great. 500 bucks for a 12 gauge 3"inch auto from cabelas.ca

Highly recommend it

I should also mention the Mossberg comes with a shim kit to adjust the stock fit which was a huge plus.

I did like the Weatherby but it is just a rebranded Hungarian gun or something to that effect and I was concerned about parts or repair. I can get mossberg parts easily and repair the gun myself without waiting months for warranty BS!

I would suggest mossberg as well over the other rifle-pistol manufacturers as pasts maybe hard to come by in a few years. I would think the 930 should suit u well, not sure about the shim kit for that one tho.

The 935 is known to have issues cycling lighter target loads, so I was not interested as I shoot alot of the cheap stuff on the trap field.

I personally don't see the need for 3.5 inch shells.

As far as camo goes, it is usually more of the flash or shine off of a polished gun that will tip off an animal, and the Mossberg is all flat black no shine.

Some guys seem to insist on the 3.5.. but if it's not necessary, then why bother..

Do I need to get a "turkey barrel" or can I et away with the 28" ? The 500 series pump sells the 3 barrel combo.. I always wondered how important a dedicated turkey barrel is...

Thanks again, fellas!

for shotgun work i like the old stand by rem 870 IC choke for slugs(in fact i almost always use a open choke cylinder or IC), mod or IC for upland birds, i have not hunted turkey yet but id just use a full choke for that

if you have a vent rib barrel theres clip on sights for them i think theres some for plain barrels too

never seen the need for a semi auto or even 3" shells (2 of my shotguns can only take 2 3/4" shells and 1 can only use 2 1/2" shells so i buy 2 3/4" for all the guns but the double i have to load my own for that )

some time im in the mood for the double or some times the good old bolt action shotgun most of the time i use pumps
