A Savage Scout in .223? Should I?

So, as people who read my previous question on here 'bout BLRs in .223 know, I am looking for a decently accurate, manually-operated, open-sighted .223. I have a Savage Model 10 that's accurate, manually-operated, but has no open sights.

Savage will sell me the peep sight, front sight, and forward mount from their Model 10-based Scout FCM rifle for $130, and my local gunsmith said he's install them for $50 (although I bet it'd be closer to $150 by the time he's done, since he has to drill two holes, one for the front sight and one for the forward mount).

The Model 10 I have (imported from US, plain jane black synthetic stock with accu-trigger) has the same sporter barrel as the Scout, SO it should have enough meat to drill and tap. Mind you, Savage said they didn't recommend it - maybe just to cover their butts?

Anybody have any ideas on this sort of conversion? I'm curious to see if anyone else has tried to reverse-engineer a Model 10 into a Scout. Obviously this rifle wouldn't be as handy as a BLR - but I already own it, and I know it's accurate. Plus, I got a sweet deal on it.

I don't want to sound like I'm wasting anyone's time or trying to validate stupid ideas here. I just want to do something right the first time...

Bonus question: Does anyone besides NCStar make an illuminated reticle long eye relief scope?
