Hey everyone!

So lets pretend it cold, not very very cold but cold like averaging around -25 degrees (C). If you knew you would need one rifle, and lets perhaps say you had to choose between an SKS or an M14 (stock condition), what would you PICK?

I'm just having a little bit of fun:)

Happy New Year!!!

awesome

awesome! What about the jungle carbine?
Mind you lets start thinking we we would want to hand load?
lol

could you cast your own bullets?

And how much would one cost used?
In "fair" condition

Keep 'em comin

My SKS fires flawlessly in -35 or so(in fact it seemed more accurate than normal?!), havent had the opportunity to try it colder!

The other day at the range it was snowing like crazy, and I put the sks (breech open) and some full strippers on the bench while I was shooting pistol. Came back 20 minutes later, and had to nearly dig out my rifle and ammo, which was frozen together! jammed it all into the snow filled SKS breech and let er go. No FTF's, jams or anything. Maybe in the spring I'll try it with mud...

Semi's will work fine in cold weather. Providing you know how to maintain them in that environment. I've used a semi .308 hunting Caribou from -5C to -70C. No problems. I'll take the M14.

Just how great and white is the North where you are?

As soon as I finish my M4 stock project I'll take my M305 out and give it a whirl in the cold for you CGNers. Maybe while I'm working to give you some real good pics.

Very interesting:) m14 in -70C ouch!
My only beef would be that I've gone and tacticalized my m14:(

I have a friend that wants to take me back to his home town/area Dawson, Yukon. We will be going on some extended canoing/hike trips, (mostly to go take landscape photographs) but I definitely want to bring with me one of my babies:) Weight consideration (simplicity) and cost to replace and cost of ammo, I'm leaning sks. But if I can scrounge up the effort, time, money I would like to reload .303's and .308's. So then I would think to go with the Enfield Jungle Carbine. (I also am rather on the smaller scale of human beings so the Carbine fits me like a DREAM...well atleast the one my father owns does:) :) :) There is one right now in the xchange forums:) hmmm...

lol

Have a wacky wednesday everyone!

FNC1 all the way, with the #4 Mk 1 as a backup. By the way, its just my opinion but to give a rifle a fair winter test it should be OUTSIDE at least 7 days before the test starts! Taking it from the closet to the range for 15 minutes shooting just doesn't cut it. My $0.02 worth

It's not the rifle. It's the lube. Any oil based lube will turn to concrete in cold weather. Shoot semi's bone dry or with powdered graphite. No oil in a bolt action's bolt either.
"...on the smaller scale of human beings so the Carbine fits me like a DREAM..." Shoot a No. 5 before you buy one. The felt recoil is stout.

Get a bubba #4 for $150.

You can't go wrong. The 10 round mag comes in handy if attacked by wolves, bears or mutant bush zombies.

You can beat the piss out of it and it will still go bang every time.
With a semi I always have fear and bad luck of jamming at bad times.

How far north? Well... Santa lives on my street.:D
Walking in any given direction is South! ;)
I'm in Labrador. Avg air temp in Jan/Feb is ~-40. Throw in 50 km winds while travelling 65 km/hr on snowmobile and we're teetering on
-100 on a 'normal' caribou hunt.

Bingo! I use dry graphite or teflon lube. Never failed yet. Still have in-line antifreeze in my kit just in case. Never had to use it on a semi, but I did have my bolt freeze shut in my Win M70. Left spent casing in chamber too long (30 mins) condesation from heat of spent round bound everything up. Poured in-line af down barel and dumped it. Cleaed round. Nice blue flame from my follow up shots! :p

Regards,

back to the question of what rifle to pick in those temperatures i think it would depend upon what the situation is. is this an "end of the world" senario where my life depends on my rifle feeding to properly beat back the zombie hords? then i would likly choose my sks.....however, if im simply hunting i would pick up my m14 right away.

WoW! thanks for all the positive responses (and first hand accounts)!

I agree with so many of the comments made. To touch on a few, Damn right its got a stout kick back, but boy is it accurate (compared to me on some other rifles). My real deterent (i know this will sound lazy...sorry everyone) but I do not think I will be reloading my own whatever round very soon. I dont have the time to devote to learning the fine craft of reloading since I'm still in university.

So I almost want to say, buy myself a no 5 mark 1 (so i dont mess up my dads), get atleast 2 more mags for the sks and buy a crate or two of ammo when I get to Dawson (by mail). And find some cheap rings for my scope so I can finish my damned m14 sage ebr. hahah

Okay I am done ranting, your turn.
