a scenario for you cgn'ers here in the M.B.R. forum

Ok , of the two rifles mentioned , I have them both .
Both are good rifles , both can do the job . But the M14 beats the SKS everytime in any comparison except ammo cost .
But I've never had a problem with 308 ammo , again the M14 wins .
I have a no 5 mk1 too , The ten round mag is nice . But in the time it takes to make ten aimed shots out of it the M14 can take about 15 aimed shots and do the magazine changes .
Also if this is a zombie , SHTF , end of the world thing , who would leave the mags pinned anyway ?
Just my .02 cents anyway .

I often shoot my Norc M-14 in the winter, and I especially enjoy blasting away when its blizzardy weather. The design of that rifle was meant to withstand winter. I like Otokiak's pics of his rifle...winter white camo done by Skullboy. That is an arctic rifle. :)

Quyanamiiq(thank you) 300Spartans as I love my Springfield-Armory M1A in SKULLBOY's white camo-stock he did up for me! I cleaned up my M1A of all oil's and lube, I'm shooting ROCHELLE dry and she works great in cold weather ... ;) I've never shot an SKS ... looks like an interesting rifle! Cheers my fellow CGNer's,

Ohmy ohmy!!!

Winter m14! I have been looking for photos of them online and have had no real luck.

I used to play a computer game called Rogue Spear and funny thing, I found the m14 to be a great rifle and optically pleasing:) . (this is before I even owned a firearm) :) :) :)

Well now looking at these photos I might have to save up for another m14.

I really wanted to save up for a ptrd, the new XCR, and one day a pump shotgun. But maybe I am spreading myself out way to thin.
Just stick to one platform and have my fun.

Do you guys often see reloading equipment forsale on the xchange forum, I mean .308 stuff. I need to do some research about reloading and maybe one day make weather specific loads? hahah

Take care!

Bingo! I use dry graphite or teflon lube. Never failed yet. Still have in-line antifreeze in my kit just in case. Never had to use it on a semi, but I did have my bolt freeze shut in my Win M70. Left spent casing in chamber too long (30 mins) condesation from heat of spent round bound everything up. Poured in-line af down barel and dumped it. Cleaed round. Nice blue flame from my follow up shots! :p

Thanks for the tip! What a great idea to carry anti-freeze.

Ollie: I'd love to see how well an sks would perform all full of mud. I would just worry about a bore obstruction.

anyone said M98?
Would be my first bet.
Second is the finn-tuned 91s .
Never owned an Enfield, so I can't say.

From the semis..... I got a big problem with the opening on the right side on the M14. You can see the trigger assy. and so can the snow. It is not the lowest temperatures that I fear the most. Rather sleet and than freezing. I'd say it will clog up the trigger. The bolt design is less bound to give any problems in the same conditions, but is far from Ideal.
The SKS fares better as function but fails in the round comparisson. Not a good hunting cartridge - the 7.62x39 that is.

An almost ideal - from the ones I've used is the Dragunov / Romak 3 (PSL).
The whole thing is sealed in (with the safety on) and you're able to shoot it even if is is in a block of ice - provided you can reach the trigger. 7.62x54 falls between 308 and 30-06, so is good enough for pretty much everything.

Please reply if you had any different experiences with this/these rifles.

Regards,

I take it that your using methalhydrate gas line antifreeze. :)

semis in the cold must be dry, graphite lube is the only way to go.

if your worried about sleet or freezing rain its not really cold. I have almost all the rifles mentioned all ready in this post, except the Dragunov / Romak 3 which sounds interesting. And they all do well in the cold if you treat them right.

you winterize your car, so you should winterize your rifles.

the hole I'm talking about is not the selector one!!!!!
It is the op-rod opening. Looks good with the whole assembly locked back.
Close it and you'll see what a big gap there's for the takee :)

Too bad we can't have the PSLs in Canada. While they're not nearly as accurate as the Match M14 , due to the slender bbl, receiver/stock design, they are sure to impress by simple functionality and dependability.
While I have never personally used it in extreme conditions, the mountain hunters have never complained about them. The only thing they requested was a folding stock : like the Galil. Nobody listened though.
