a serious 'Elk combo' for the .270win

Hey guys with exp on shooting elk out to 300m with a 270, what have you used and what would you reccommend, esp for the bigger bulls!?


Im going to be down to one rifle an thats 270. Hopefully if the sales go well an i get the new rifle.

Keeping in mind 300 and 400 not off the cards but generally 50-250 m 9 time out of 10.

Im going to use AR2209 or AR2213 i think it is and unsure in projectile weight and breed yet

Haven't chased elk, I have been involved in a few moose kills with the .270 and provided the guy pulling the trigger did his job the end result has been consistently the same a very dead moose not far from where it was shot. I'd give preference to any Nosler Partition, 140 grain Accubond and 130 grain TTSX depending on what shot best. I wouldn't turn my nose up at any bonded bullet or even a tougher cup and core bullet like the 150 grain Power Point though.
 
Personally I like Hornady 140 grain BTSP in .270 going 2800 fps - this has dumped a couple moose on the spot
Second choice is Speer Grand slams in 130 grain going 3100 fps - shot lots of game with this bullet

I wouldn't be afraid to use the Barnes ttsx or tsx either - couple buddies use them on everything - they are very good, but I have yet to have experience with them

My buddy recently gave me a 270 and 200 rounds of Federal blue box (Hi-Shok) ammo loaded with 130 grain Speer Grand Slam bullets.

Could I hunt moose or elk with confidence with that load? I've previously used a 300 WM on moose and elk, though I have also shot a moose with 150 grain Hornady Interlock bullet.

I've never used them, but by reputation Grand Slams are good penetrators. They'll work if (sorry to repeat the mantra) you do your part. If that's all I had, I'd use them.

Having said that, I would tend to choose a 150 (either Partition or SST) for game that size (for my .270).

Yes.
My regular hunting companion has hunted almost all his big game for many years with a .270 and 130 grain speer grand slams. He probably has taken about thirty elk and a dozen moose with that load. I've meanwhile used a variety of cartridges and loads, all of them with heavier bullets and some more " premium" construction. It would be difficult to say my choices actually killed elk or moose noticeably better. Perhaps a little, but his were clean kills.
