A short history of the M14 by Field & Stream

Interesting, and for the most part doesn't gloss over the fact that the M14 really did have a disgraceful service as a front line rifle. The only thing I don't like is that it repeats the fallacy that the M14 is an accurate platform. Rack grade M14's were quite inaccurate, and it takes a lot of tuning just to make the accuracy mediocre. They can never be counted on to be tack drivers.

It's true indeed. As a pleased owner of a all-TNW M1A, and having built another all TRW M14, shelled out the bucks for a heavy match barrel, etc etc only to find I can't come close to my $1000 AR off the bench no matter how much I spend, I have to scratch my head everytime it is described as "highly accurate". It can be moderately accurate, battle accurate for sure even in a marksman role, but it's no tack driver on the sweeping basis it is often described as being. Its jarring gas system, op rod rattling the barrel, and thin barrel makes sure of that. Best iron sights of any mil rifle I've tried though.
