Okay i can only have 2 guns at my houseV:I:. This means i want to keep my m14 their and i already have a 22. My friend says he can store my 22. That being said i need a shot gun that can be useful in SHTF, tactical shooting, skeet, and hunting all types of game in SW Ontario. My thoughts where so far the R870 due to the different barrels and shot loads of 12 3/4 or the mossburg 500 due to similar up's and down but i am open to much more.

So what is your ideas on this and which one is best and why?

Thanks

Mossy 930 12g.

It's got a 5 round cap, more in a SHTF situation as you can float a round.

It's a soft shooting semi auto, lots of firepower, and it's modular barrel system allows you to switch easily...

I've got a 26 inch barrel for hunting / sporting clays with 3 different chokes and a 24 inch rifled barrel with rifle sights for slug shooting.

It's drilled and tapped so I suppose when the zombies come I can slap my reddot on that puppy and let loose.

Why???

How much $$ do you want to spend?
Get one that fits the needs of the job it will be doing most often.
You'll use it for hunting most often, and hopefully the S will never hit the fan.
I very much like seth's suggestion and might consider one for myself, but also want a dedicated "home defense" shotgun, which would have a lot of capacity and a short barrel.

You're on the right track with the 870 and 500. Multiple barrels and lots of accessories. You can even buy them in packages and save a bit of cash over the cost of a replacement barrel. 28" vent rib with chokes, rifled barrel with cantilever scope mount, and security barrel - sounds about right for almost any situation.

Here's the solution to keep you in all three guns..
Keep the 2 your folks are already aware of (why a third is a problem completely escapes me, regardless).
Buy an 870.
Buy a Shotlock ht tp://www.shotlock.com/- hide that puppy in the back of your closet behind all your old winter coats and mechano/lego collection from your youth.
Mount it up on the wall - for the quickly available authority offered only by a shotgun.

If you can only have one, might as well get the best.

Show up at a skeet range with that, and you will quickly find out it is a lousy choice for skeet.

A shotgun that "can do it all" will NOT be a "tactical" shotgun. Hunting and the skeet/trap/sporting clays games require shotguns that can be shot well; not shotguns that just look cool.

I'd pin my old Benelli M4 against anything you had on the skeet range. Go tell the USMC in Afghanistan the Benelli is not good for hunting.

The M4 is a great shotgun don't get me wrong.... But I highly doubt it would fair out very well in the duck/goose blind unless your shots were at 25 yards and under.

My choice, based on my experience would be an 870 Wingmaster. I have a 28" rem choke bbl, a 20" rifle sighted barrel and a 12.5 Dominion interchangeable choke barrel with Remington rifle sights on it. With these 3 barrels the gun does everything I need, other cowboy action shooting....Thats what my Winchester 1897's and SxS are for.

choke tubes guys...they make so much difference. 18.5" M4 comes threaded right? Problem solved. To the OP, the Rem 870 express tactical comes with an 18.5" barrel threaded for remchokes, opening up access to any 2 3/4" and 3" 12 ga. ammo. If you need more range than that, factory barrels are affordable enough to pick up a spare.

That is an absurd analogy. Trap and skeet are not Afghanistan. If you really can't see the difference, it is likely because you have never done either.

Yes the chokes tubes help for sure. I have taken my 870 to the goose fields with the 12.5 barrel and the modified and full tubes and 3" steel loads. It worked, but it still did not have the range that the 28" barrel has.....Plus my hunting partners were ready to shoot me from the beating they took from the muzzle blast out of the 12.5" barrel!!!!

Yeah this is why i seem to be leaning to the R870 or mossburg as mentioned lots of chokes and barrels but other shotgun options are out their and i don't want to ignore other options. Not sure i want the bennile i am no expert but the lack of chokes are not out their? I am willing to send about 700$ or so on the shot gun and barrels/tacticool accessories if they are needed. (i am a minimalist in add ons for weapons). Waterfowl, turkey, skeet, target are all things i will use for so the need for choke and barrels are good as their is no limit on barrels.

More info on limit kinda off topic
Also i can't just hide one in the back of my closet for a few reasons. My closet is really small. It is full with the current 2. My dad is a cop and is a bit investigative i wont get it past him. Don't worry about my limit of guns unless you have a solution, but their no convincing that solves my mom's issues with an arsenal of guns. I tried everything but my mom is scared of guns and does not no anything about them. Seems odd my dad has one and works with them and i have 2 and also work with them in the reserves but oh well. Dad enforces the limit because it the whole husband wife thing i am sure the married type know...

Your $700 limit should be achievable with a good used 3" 870, it will free up the funds for a couple extra barrels. Perhaps a 12.5" from Canada Ammo and watch for a used mid length turkey barrel on the Equipment Exchange section.

If you go with an 870 I can't emphasize enough that you should look for a used Wingmaster over a new Express model....

Okay i think i saw a used wing master on the EE but i am told it is cleaning heavy it does not like getting dirty not good for hunting. I have shot this one of all the other shot guns and really like it but it is heavy. Not really a concern i plan on carrying an M14 for large game hunting out of my WMD. I am not weak i can do it just is that it for down falls on the 870? + for me is shooting it so already familiar, like the action it is pump and i am very efficient with pump, I know how to clean it and change barrels already. It can have an 8 shot tube that can easily be removed and plugged. Also when i get more training as a weapons tech i the forces i will know more about the shotgun. Sounds like the #option after writhing this but i am still not 100% convinced i know it has to have flaws some where.

That is an absurd analogy. Trap and skeet are not Afghanistan. If you really can't see the difference, it is likely because you have never done either.

I have done both with my m4, My best is 18/25 on trap(done like 10 rounds ever) and the only round of skeet I have ever done was a 5 with one stage being a perfect 4.

It takes chokes (mod is factory) and 18.5" is more then enough barrel to get enough velocity to take down anything, well past "25 yards."

But since the OP only has 700$ this discussion is moot.

Whovever told you that 870's don't like getting dirty and aren't great for hunting is of questionable intelligence... I apologize for my bluntness.

I have hunted and packed my 870 for going on 24 years now in some pretty miserable conditions, and it has never let me down yet. I have had it's action get polluted with all manner of debris while carrying it at work for bear protection on the job (river silt, pine needles, snow and ice) and sure it may get a little gritty to cycle but it has never failed... Of all of the pump shotguns out there it has to be the one the easiest if not the easiest to field strip and clean (hands down compared to a Winchester 1200/1300 or Mosberg 500). Field stripping disassembly can be done in under 2 minutes once you are experienced and the only tool required is at minimum a nail (have even used a ball point pen) to push the pins that retain the trigger mechanism out, a punch is a much better choice though.

In my opinion the only thing I don't like is the fact that the ejector is riveted into the receiver and require special tooling to replace it. But as I previously stated mine is 24 years young and the ejector has yet to fail after an excess of 20,000 rounds.

I bought a Remington 870 Combo from Lebaron, about $500, I think.

It came with:
- 20"? Turkey barrel with fibre sights and turkey choke
- 26"? Waterfowl barrel with top rib and steel-friendly choke
- 24"? Rifled barrel with cantilever mount for deer

Plus, if I use the turkey barrel with a Rem Breecher choke, I can use it for competition, SHTF, etc, etc.

This shotty does pretty much everything very well. It does not have flashlights, lasers, folding stock, collapsible stock, bayonets, bipods, Huey door-gun mounts, etc (I had one like that, but it "felt" horrible to shoulder and fire. This gun fits me perfectly.)
