Well, not my usual post... but hey, sometimes things just find their way into my shop without me knowing about it
I got a couple of Lee Enfields at a very reasonable price from another CGN member. Both with drilled receivers, no mags, mismatched butt / forend. One's a No4 the other a No1Mk3.
The No4 Longbranch receiver is dated 1944, with a '43 cut barrel. It came with a No1Mk3 butt (Australian coachwood), and a darker forend.
The No1Mk3 came with a nice but loose Monte-Carlo-style butt. The receiver is butchered (that'll be for another story), so I thought I'd spend some time on the No4 (not sure what will happen to the No1Mk3 yet).
To my great delight, the Monte-Carlo butt was actually a better fit on the No4 receiver. Still loose, but requiring less patch-up for a snug fit in the butt socket. It was also varnished, so I stripped it and refinished it with linseed oil. In my "bin-of-despair", I found a matching walnut sportered forend, leftover from a previous un-sporterizing project.
So here is the current status of this rifle. Besides fitting the butt, I also worked on the trigger to give it back it's double pull (which was lost). I did put a scope mount I had that matched the holes drilled in its receiver, but I am unsure about the alignement - seems to be slightly off-centered. Once I receive the rings I ordered for the dovetail mount I'll see if that's the case with a scope on it. May end up being a case of iron-sight-only.
I do have a question though, anyone would know where I should look for a replacement butt plate? That one is broken...
