I have a positive story to tell tonight. You may see my recently acquired Weatherby XXII listed in the "My .22 Shoots Horrible at 50 meters Challenge/Discussion". A problem child since I got it. Capable of accuracy, when it feels like it. It usually doesn't. I declined having a certain other attempt to troubleshoot it, and thank goodness who knows what monstrosities may have occurred had I allowed unfettered access to my baby! I brought it in to Al Simmons in Hamilton. After having it a couple weeks I hadn't heard any news of it so I decided while passing through the area to retrieve it as I have an event coming up requiring a sporter rifle and my CZ was not up to task after being recovered from the torture chamber, still bleeding from her wounds. I was told much time was spent on it and no good results came of it. Testing of many ammos, shimming a pressure pad under the barrel, giving everything in the setup the due diligence once over. I was shown a target displaying exactly the performance I achieved no matter what ammo tried.

This confirms my thoughts on it prior to taking it in, it either needs an expensive barrel cut off and re-chambering operation or a new barrel. I asked the cost of troubleshooting, bracing for another large bill.....

"Twenty five bucks for the ammo, we couldn't fix it."

Now that, ladies and gents, is how an honorable gunsmith handles a case where they cannot remedy the problem! No crazy, permanent modifications performed without permission, only the requested service. No damage due to carelessness. Treated as if one of their own. Certain others should take note of a proper attitude towards customer service, it goes a long way towards earning yourself a good review. I just tell it like it is, no horse manure.

She's lucky she's pretty...

Could it be your scope is screwed internally?

Trust me when I say everything simple and reasonable has been done and considered. If I have a rifle that is not performing it has some kind of barrel flaw. I have a vast selection of ammo, how "picky" can a rifle be? It is not the shooter, I am capable, the testers at Al Simmons are capable, our results are the same. This rifle has worn 3 scopes proven to shoot well on other rifles and tried with two sets of rings.

Example of this scope on my Savage MK II

What I can tell ya is that inspecting with my borescope reveals fouling build up in the chamber area at 12-2 o'clock, vs an even 360 degree ring. I shot 25 rounds of Aguila Sniper Sub Sonic 60 grain with terrible accuracy, short stroked only the chamber area with a dry patch and got these chunkies of lead out. This was from a 100% clean barrel before shooting.

Remedy is to either chop off the offending chamber and re-chamber it or get a new barrel.

I've read a few of your posts, and wonder, did you ever end up with a barrel or chamber (in any rifle you own, since buying a bore scope), that wasn't messed up?

Sure have. My luck has been exceptionally poor though. I have 2 rimfires and 2 shotguns that are fine.

I can also consider my Rem 597 acceptable for it's intended purpouse because it does shoot pretty well for a semi-auto sporter. The reason it won't make the 1/2 challenge is evident in the bore. With a nice barrel it would be a great shooter.

The Lilja should be good once the headspace is adjusted and crown repaired.

It is a fine line in the barrels between "imperfection" and "flaw". Little things make a big difference. No chamber is free of tool marks because all lapping is done prior to this operation.

In this rifle it is only evident something ain't quite right in the chamber by observing how the fouling builds after it is fired. A fluke of how the tool marks are arranged or reamed slightly off center to the bore? My guess is as good as yours because as I see it the barrel is otherwise excellent or it would never put together a bunch of the tight groups it has here and there.
