hi guys, shotguns are not really my thing and as such I have a question regarding magazine capacity; I have always believed that shotguns have to be fixed to hold no more than 3 rounds, lately I've been hearing people talk about extended tubes and 7 + rounds, is this legal in Canada? I'm thinking maybe I was wrong and it's only hunting shotguns that have to be set for 3 rounds. clarification?
thanks

Hunting migratory waterfowl anywhere in Canada the law is 2+1, one in the chamber and two in the magazine. This same rule applies in some provinces, such as Ontario, for all shotgun hunting whether migratory waterfowl or not. Other provinces have different rules.

In a semi-automatic shotgun 5+1 is the federal law that applies at all times to all semi-automatic long guns. In a repeater such as a pump gun there are no mandated limits.

Not a stupid question....but a stupid rule....ANY hunting (even deer or bear) you can only have the ability to hold 3 rounds ....its a MNR enforced rule and they have a stick they shove in your shotgun to ensure it will only hold 2 rounds in the mag tube.
If you are going to a range or dont use it for hunting you can have as many as you want.

Uhhh... It's an MNR enforced rule in Ontario.... Provincial thing. Read the regs in your own province, or the province you plan on hunting in.

Migratory is Federal, so the 3 shot thing is consistent across the board.

Yeah the 3 round thing is a hunting thing. If your just at the range or whatever then there is no limit, unless you have a semi-auto, then there is a five round limit.

This is to the best of my knowledge what the laws are. Best thing to do if you're ever unsure is check Canada's and your local laws etc.

Also note that you can use a 5+1 shotgun for hunting, as is very common with pumps, but the shooter places a piece of dowling in the mg tube to limit capacity. It's not a special shotgun or mag or anything.

And what is the reasoning behind this law anyways? Can I varmint hunt with a 10 rd .22LR?

So weird.

varmints are not GAME; yes you can hunt varmints with a standard 10 round 22- or any mag limit- it's the MIGRATORY BIRD ACT that limits your shotgun capacity to 3- most folks can't be bothered to remove the dowel and leave the shotgun equipped to hunt migratory fowl- just change the barrel /and or choke - as far as semi-automatics go; it's your friend, good old c68 , the firearms act that limits mag capacity there- 2 different acts, 2 different mag capacity

"...what is the reasoning..." Because the Socialist F**ks saw it being done Stateside. Mag capacity laws should have been covered on your PAL course.
"...you can use a 5+1 shotgun for hunting..." Depends on where you are. You cannot hunt anything in Ontario with more than 3 rounds in a shotgun. Your fine with your .22 though.
