A summary of Non Restricted 7.62x51/.308 Winchester Modern Sporting Rifle Options and Prices

For those looking for Semi-Auto 5.56/7.62x39 NR options please view the separate thread linked to HERE

So to summarise

$1650 Browning BAR

Browning has a very long history of manufacturing semi-automatic rifles even if it doesn't make particularly modern pieces it has the know how to do what it does well. This rifle's forefather is the 1967 Browning BAR (Not the M1918 Automatic Rifle, having three firearms called the "Browning BAR" isn't very helpful) and it is back in town to carry the name forward.

Weight: 3.4kg
Length: 100cm - 112cm
Trigger pull: 1.7kg
Barrel: 45.7cm - 52cm
Accuracy potential: 1.5 - 2MOA

Features
- Integral or detachable magazine
- Wood and synthetic furniture options
- Multiple calibres available

Pros
- Points naturally at targets when lifted in a fashion similar to that of a shotgun
- Accurate out to 300m for hunting
- Functions well with a variety of bullet weights

Cons
- Hard to clean, Modern Sporting Rifle (MSR) designs like the Tavor, Keltec and FAMAE will be significantly easier to dissasemble and clean
- Alterations for aftermarket parts are very slim, again a MSR will be significantly better in this regard
- Slow and finicky to reload when using non-detachable magazines
- Action is open to debris, snow and other issues that could cause jams
- Bolt hold open catch is in an awkward position

$1460 - $1800 Benelli R1

Benelli brings to mind shotguns, very good semi-auto shotguns specifically in my mind. So a semi-auto rifle should be intersting right? Correct

Weight: 3.2 - 3.6kg
Length: 112cm - 117cm
Trigger pull: Could not confirm
Barrel: 56cm - 61cm
Accuracy potential: Could not confirm

Features
- Detachable magazines
- Wood and synthetic furniture options
- Multiple calibres available

Pros
- Shim kit helps fit rifle to you
- Can be fitted with picatinny rail for more greater range of optics options

Cons
- Hard to clean, Modern Sporting Rifle (MSR) designs like the Tavor, Keltec and FAMAE will be significantly easier to dissasemble and clean
- Alterations for aftermarket parts are very slim, again a MSR will be significantly better in this regard
- Action is open to debris, snow and other issues that could cause jams

NB: Very few videos or articles exist reviewing the rifle except from people who appear to just be reading from the marketing brochure. I am in no position to judge them but I would suggest that a some of these people may benefit from advertising these rifles. That is not to say it isn't a good rifle but buyer beware.

$1750 - $2000 FN FNAR Competition

This is FN's take on the Browning BAR and it is a rifle to take seriously. With a great looking wood stock and a very high quality barrel it is a tack driver. But it comes at a cost in that it weighs 4kg empty and is based on a very old design (as is the Browning BAR of course) which comes with inherent issues.

Weight: 4kg
Length: 105cm
Trigger pull: kg
Barrel: 51cm
Accuracy potential: Sub - MOA

Features
- Detacheable Magazines
- Adjustable cheekpiece
- Picatinny rail
- Fully ambidextrous magazine release

Pros
- Highly accurate
- Adjustable cheekpiece
- Picatinny rail as standard

Cons
- Non-standard magazines (SR-25/FAL/M14 are highly common choices)
- Is currently a discontinued product, ie. no longer being made so once it's gone it's gone. It's only included because they are still on the shelves.
- Action is open to debris, snow and other issues that could cause jams
- Bolt hold open catch is in an awkward position

Hahaha. Because they are unaware of the other models of semi automatic firearms that have been available in Canada for a long time. Go ahead. Keep your secrets.

Thanks for the list. I hadn’t really considered the FN. I remember now that it’s on this list, that Carmel had some great groups posted with his. I will have to look at them again.

lets not give Wendy a List ok thanks

This. Many of us could add models. I refuse to place it out there.

Exactly right , truer words have never been spoken . Not much sense in giving Wendy and the Poly gang a road map on what firearms to ban .

Delete this thread!

You know there’s a huge list available online, right? You have to be pretty naive to think that someone posting on an Internet forum is going to be the butterfly that ends the world.

Strange when people are scared of talking about legal things in a fear of those things might become illegal. What country are we in? Sad.

The SFSS are no doubt aware of most all firearms, although the inconsistencies in the May 1 OIC might make one wonder about that.
The various antis and media types who patrol this site might be fundamentally ignorant about firearms. CGN is likely a useful source of information for them.

Don't be afraid of lists

Hi all

Some of you seem to be a little misguided in your approach to information and how it can be found.

While I appreciate that you are aiming I suppose to preserve your remaining legal privileges as best as possible I don't believe in Pearl Clutching the moment my legal rights are made openly visible to new shooters or even experienced shooters.

I disagree with the notion of "It's better to hide information from everyone on our side in the hope that the person we don't like won't find it". I come from a country that tried that route, it was driven by frightened old men who wern't willing to risk their own possessions and felt better to suppress others in the hope that their personal world wouldn't be attacked again. Shockingly despite this genius tactic the UK hasn't gotten any better.

I find it strange that people with signatures stating "free the West" or "When freedom is outlawed, only outlaws will be free" are very quick to jump up and demand the censoring of information. I imagine I could spend a lot of time spelling out the hypocrisy of censorship for thee but not for me but I can't be bothered.

The information I have found is widely available, it is not hard to find. It does not take much effort, please observe the below master logic which allows me to hack into every single firearms database on the planet to snaffle out the secretive list of guns some of you wish to hide:

1. Google search: "List of Gun Makers"
2. Go to: "www.gunmaker1.com, Products, Rifles, Semi-Auto
3. Repeat and take notes
4. Google: Gun shop Canada
5. Open: "Gun Shop 1"
6. Go to: Products, Rifles, Semi-Auto
7. Repeat and take notes

I find it quite distressing that what I presume to be gun owning adults are so fearful and ignorant of the ability to conduct such a process. A process which the world has been conducting for nearly 30 years. Indeed it is ironic that such people who often vocally rebel against the idea of overbearing government control almost immediately jump to hiding under tables and conducting the digital equivalent of book burning the moment they feel threatened. How very heroic.

Perhaps instead of spending time on forums like this referring to people with conflicting political opinions as "The Enemy", "Libtards", "Hitlerites" and worse a little more time could be spent learning, exercising and being open minded. Then for example when someone posts a list, much like the ones you receive from Canada tire in the post you will see it as the good thing it is and not feel the need to say that the person likes to "poo in their own bed", "Is a paid shill", "a disgrace to the firearms community" (all from the Black 5.56/7.62x39 NR list I posted).

So step away, relax, help other people and remember that yes the heads of multi thousand strong departments or political groups are able to conduct basic internet searches as are their employees. Spend your efforts helping shooters and not hating them.

"don't talk about NR firearms" is just another one of those pervasively stupid ideas like "ban the Ruger Charger pistol so that 10/22 mags won't be prohib" that might briefly sound like a good idea, but under any scrutiny turns out to be brainlessly stupid.

It's not even that hard for them:

1) Get a copy of the FRT
2) Pull out everything that's restricted and put it in the ban pile.
3) Pull out everything that's semi-automatic and put it in the ban pile.
4) Pull out everything that's bigger than 30 cal and put it in the ban pile.
4) Give that stack of papers to Bill Blair.

The biggest challenge is going through all that paper, the reason the ban list is so incoherent is probably because there were pages stuck together every now and then and they missed some because of that.

If CBSA had actually done thier job then they would have caught the Ruger Charger pistol mags over ten capacity then we wouldn't be in this situation in the first place.

Someone at a border point didn't do thier duty.
Yet we suffer for thier incompetence.
