Today I picked up a Chinese SKS, it looks ok, even beside my ###y russian one. The thing had never been cleaned, I would guess just wiped the cosmo off and go. The gas port and piston were caked, under the bolt and magazine all filthy. So you would imagine bore had been neglected also. Well after a hour cleaning it looks fine, no damage done, the bluing is ####, and probably further dulled by application of degreaser, but I got it for a shooter, and the bore looks perfect. I shot 10 rds thru before I got it, and one FTE but i am confident it will now run like a charm. I guess my point is all that neglect didn't seem to hurt the vitals. Awesome! Was thinking of putting a reciever-side mount for a scope or red dot and go to war on the coyotes. I was going to redo the stock, but I think ugly is fine.
A testament to SKS durability....
