I looked but didn't see this covered so forgive me if I simply missed it.

I asked a qustion in the general forum and it was quickly answered. However, several other members were clearly interested in the topic and a conversation ensued. A moderator came in and said the question had been answered and closed the thread to further comments.

Here's my question; Why close the thread? If members want to talk about it, what possible harm is being done by allowing them to? What is the point to shutting people down for merely talking about a topic? Am I missing something?

You asked a question. It was answered. There is extensive ongoing discussion of the Fredricton tragedy elsewhere on this site. Have you participated there? There is no reason for yet another thread on the topic.

Can you direct me to where this discussion is taking place, I can't find it.

CGN News Digest. Where news articles are posted.
At least three threads with over 300 posts and over 30,000 views.

No I was not aware there was another discussion on that topic. My question was specifically about the event being used to justify a hand gun ban. Is that what the other thread you're speaking of is about? Perhaps it would be helpful to tell members why a particular thread is being closed rather than just doing it so as to avoid these questions. Further, since we are presumably adults here, how is a related but specific thread hurting the forum generally? Or are we assumed to require the heavy hand of supervision?

Their Sand Box their Rules.
Sometimes the topic goes off the rails and in order to keep order the thread gets closed.
As in Asked and answered.
Rob

And then they are moved to CGN News Digest forum which does not show up in New Post search .
So the next guy post the same question because he doesn't see it in the new post search .
And round & round we go ;)

There are also threads in the Firearms Politics News Articles forum.

Look, I'm not trying to be difficult. I'm not the guy who spends hours every day making this a valuable forum for gun owners so I'm happy to do what I can to follow the rules and get along. All I'm trying to say is that with multiple forums there is no simple way to know where a topic might be covered so if you find a need to close off a thread, I get it, but a simple "this question has been answered and this topic is being discussed in X forum" would help and explain it to all. Easy Peasy.

Naw you just sound like your whiney.
Figure out where threads are and how they get sorted and you wont need an explanation from the mods, who keep it neat and tidy.
Easy Peasy.
