Hello,
I have shot guns every time I have been to Vegas (6 times) and absolutely love it. I have been thinking about getting my license for years and now is the time. I have read through everything and am a bit confused about a few things and have some questions.

So I need to get either a PAL or PAL R license or I assume I can get both. There are courses I can take but they are not mandatory, although I will take one. Do the courses cover both licenses? Do I write the license test as soon as the course is done? Is there somewhere in the downtown Toronto area that offers the courses?

Do gun clubs offer courses and can they guide you through everything? I would like to join a gun club and I am in Toronto area (Yonge & St. Bloor) so it is important for me to join a club within a short drive within the city. Do certain clubs only allow certain guns? Do clubs in the Toronto area also have somewhere outside of the city that you can use an outdoor area?

I know there is a mentor section, will someone bring me to their club and allow me to shoot their guns, is that the way it works?

I am also wondering how expensive a sport this is? I know there is course/license fees, club memberships, purchasing of a gun & storage container, ammo. I know it’s hard to say because there are a lot of variables but how much a year is typically spent?

Sorry about all the questions I just feel a bit overwhelmed with everything and want to make sure I understand the process. I hope none of my questions were too stupid.

You can go for both restricted and non-restricted...may as well get both done at the same time. When i took my courses...i got lucky and got to finish it all in one day..test included. as for gun ranges...good luck...no one is taking anyone at the moment..try looking and googling some places in the new year. some clubs only allow handguns..some only allow .22's...some don't allow guns over a certain calibre...all depends on the range and their rules.

The sport is only expensive if you make it expensive. I bought a .22 for 300 bucks..and 500 rounds for 17 dollars...some guns can be $1200 dollars...and $23.00 for only 20 rounds. It all depends on what your shooting. As for range fees...it varies...on average..i beleive it's like 400-600 for the year...don't quote me on that.

You can take a weekend PAL/RPAL course which will cover all topics on non-restricted and restricted and include your 4 exams (2 written and 2 practical). Not included is the $80 fee for your RPAL card from the RCMP.

Whenever you decide to get your RPAL, it probably won't be another 5-6mts before you get to shoot your restricted toys on average. Better get on that NOW! :)

Like any sport, starting off can be expensive with the cost of guns and ammo and if you get restricted, club memberships.

Can you recommend somewhere in downtown Toronto or vicinity where I can take the course? Thanks so much!!!

Also it kind of discouraging to hear that none of the Toronto clubs are acception new members, too bad.

I took my course with Firearms Academy of Canada (416 966-4867). They do their courses at the Days Inn near Wilson & Jane. They're pretty stand up folks (husband and wife team) with lots of info and hands on work so you really become familiar and comfortable with ALL the firearms.

You can buy your manuals for $12 each or just download them here:

And yeah, do both RPAL and PAL at the same time so you don't have to go back again, its pretty much the same thing, the only difference is transport laws and registration really

in terms of money.... you picked the wrong hobby! haha alot of expensive impulse buys will be made while expanding your arsenal.
but like everyone else mentioned or will mention, just grab the basics first, start cheap and get the hang of it, start of with a small caliber like a .22 or something, if u want to get into hunting you can do the same, start with that same .22 and hunt small game and move up

no one ever mastered something over night... well Asian's & math aside...
