A unicorn SW

Very nice. Don't have any exceptional knowledge about the gun but it is rare for sure and lots of folks like the gen 3 Smiths.

The Comp-40 was made by the Performance center in various forms for the Lew Horton Distributing Co., 240 were made in the PCE serial prefix with the extended compensator on the regular 4006 slides, the last 40 were engraved "Tactical Competition Special Edition One of Forty" (PCE0200-PCE0239).

I've seen this particular pistol for sale and it went for $803 + tax & shipping. Not bad for a unicorn, good catch!

I wasn't able to find much info at all on this piece. I tried searching for 4006 performance center, 40 comp, comp 40, and I can barely find a matching picture on Google. I'll take whatever info anyone has on it, cause I can hardly find anything. I think I did pretty well on it price wise. I don't have a clue what this gun is even worth to be honest, it's not brand new and doesn't come with the box/papers etc, so the value would be a bit lower than if it was NIB. The biggest thing is, it's such an oddball gun there's almost no info online on it to even know what it would be worth.

The 627 is in great shape, it has a weird trigger pull that I wasn't quite expecting. It has a light takeup, then gets quite a bit heavier than I'd expect for the last bit prior to dropping the hammer.

Damn, $803. I would have bought it for 1000 haha. Very very cool gun. I am about to get an FBI 1076 10mm and considering a 1006 as well but one of these would be extra cool.

Very nice. I'm assuming that the Comp 40 is not prohibited. I have a standard 4006 which is a 12(6) by a few mm. The Comp 40 looks like it's got 3/4" of extra barrel.

I swore they made a 4.1" version but those must be prohib conversions then. Within the past 6months there was a Restricted 4006 with 4.1" barrel on the EE for sale but that could have been a conversion. I really would like a 5906 one day.

AFAIK, the 4006 was only ever made with a 4" (102mm) barrel. Back when these first came out, when you acquired a handgun you took it to the local police station, where the local firearms officer would verify the make/model/serial # etc. They would also measure the barrel. It's possible that some of the 4" S&W autos were measured incorrectly, thus their restricted classification, but there are also reports of guns that were made with barrels that were slightly longer than standard. They only needed a few mm to go from prohibited to restricted.

I saw a rare restricted Model 459 go for $600 in an auction last weekend. By comparison, a Model 439 and a Model 659 (both prohib) went for $225 and $375, respectively. Prices do not include auction fees, tax, etc.

Guys remember 4" is not always 4". I have a 686, a former UD Customs gun, that is a "4" inch with a 105.14mm barrel. It is registered as "Restricted". I know of three other former US Custom 686 with barrels out to 105.77mm. all registered as Restricted. It would not surprise me if there are 4006's with slightly longer barrels. The late Ken Soucie told me he had run into a number pf S&W's with slightly longer barrels from that period of manufacture. Worth measuring the barrels.

I just had to see what that would look like...

Obviously not a prohib.

Cool. I should talk to Soley Canadian to see if he could do something about my holster's length. Just kidding. It looks more like a Liberal Assault revolver. I could use it on the SOB who stole my Mountain Bike on the weekend. King of the Royal Mounted is on the case....not.
