A wonderful day today! 2 new finds

Picked up two beauties today.

Top one is an 8mm Mauser - 1888 commission rifle. Not great shape, but pretty cool.

Bottom one is of course a Lee Enfield. It's a No.4 Mk2 with bayonet, never fired.

The Enfield is absolutely beautiful. Before I picked it up today I was considering using it for the summer, but, now that I've got it home, I'm having a hard time convincing myself to do anything but hang it on a wall.

Whadya think? I don't know much about the Mauser, but the price was right on both of them.

I have to say, it's one of the "sweetest" rifles I've ever picked up. I'm sure you old hats at the milsurp game probably wouldn't bat an eye at it, but man, it impressed the hell outta me!! LOL

Even my better half, who is not really into guns AT ALL thinks it's beautiful..

Very nice find partner. Have been looking at a couple of Commision rifles at our local shop. Normally dont collect that far back, but they also have a couple lovely 71/84's also. The No.4 MK2 is lovely and best is someone else did the "deed" of freeing her of the wrap and cozmo. Like you, I'd just gently fondler her while watching TV with a pint and shoot your other Enfields.

I have a 1950 Long Branch and a Savage, but I would love to get ahold of a mint No.4 Mk.2 also. They have their trigger pinned to the receiver instead of the trigger guard (supposedly helping to achieve consistent accuracy.)

From what I hear, they make great shooters.

The story on the Enfield and Mauser is as follows.... The husband of a woman who is a friend of the family bought this about 20 years ago. He died about 10 years ago, and she was looking for a fitting owner for these rifles.

Apparently, she choose me to be their new owner. She's a wonderful woman, used to shoot IPSC with her husband. Today she showed me her AK47... LOL

I feel quite privileged to have it in my home. I'm now trying to decide how to display it! LOL


Maplesugar, therin lies my dilema, I wanted to shoot it for nostalgia sake this summer as my "sniper rifle" part of my service rifle competitions. But, I don't think I can now!! LOL It's too nice.

No matter what, it has lived a cherished live to this point. If in time you choose to run a few rounds through her, so be it. It's better of than a lot of it's siblings.
Christ, can you believe we talk about rifles this way? We truly are "gunnutz"!

FYI, the commission is an 1888/05 with the charger guide modification. An 1888/14 would be a "holy grail" for this model. I've only ever seen one. Basically they built up charger lips with weld and machined them to look like a Gew98 rear bridge.

The Enfield is beautiful, take care of the wood, but use it. They were made to be used, why have it if not to use it. Enjoy it , every single round. By the way it looks I'm sure people will admire it at the range and will have lots of offers to take it off your hands. Great find!
