OK, I don't want to whine too much about this here, but I thought I should at least share my poor experience in dealing with Joe Cowan concerning the rests he and his students make. I had some problems with mine once it arrived, some cosmetic, some functional, and his efforts to remedy the situation left a little to be desired. If you get a good rest, great! If you have any issues with it, you may or may not get them squared away. From the very start he wanted to shift the blame, but his ideas and assertions didn't fit the evidence. In the end, I'm left with a rest that's been improperly manufactured and assembled, and doesn't function properly, and he does not care to give me a properly made rest in exchange for this one. I'm quite disappointed by the whole exchange. He thinks it's fine, and I'm annoyed by the damn thing every time I use it. *sigh* Anyway, here's all the horrible details if you're interested in reading that.

For $210+ dollars, it had better be perfect. Is he willing to give you your money back?
Personally, if I get something that is a lemon, I never want to exchange for the same item. I'll take my money and time elsewhere.

Oh, he offerred it back many times, but I don't want it back. I wanted the item in question, and still do, just not a defective one. I'll just have to bring it to the local machinist to fix the crooked legs. I can live with the cosmetic damage. Oh well.

Yesterday I replied to your must recent e-mail and outlined three options for us to finalize this situation.
I realize there may have been an electronic glitch or a problem with my e-mail and you perhaps did not receive my reply and the three options.
I cannot give you a new rest at this time, they are all gone.
The three options are:
Option 1:
Send the rest back to me and I will completely rebuild it and pay your shipping costs to send it back.
Option 2:
Send the rest back and I will refund all of your money including shipping costs to send it back.
Option 3:
Keep the rest and replacement parts and use it.
Awaiting your choice........................

Sounds to me like he is being reasonable with it...why would you take it to a third party to get repaired when he has offered to redo it..or get your money back and hire a machinist to build ya one...post some pics of this thing with the flaws and such as the pics don't show up on thelink you provided

i agree with chola on this thing, after reading the exchanges between the two of you it seems that he has offered to fix it and even refnd the money to you. you say that he is being unreasonable and trying to avoid you. maybe i am missing something, from reading all that.

I would

tend to agree as well.

You should have sent it back to get another or got your money back. If I were making them and you were not happy I would definately want it back, and return your money in full.

Wow _Shorty, I don't see what you are complaining about... last comment on that page as follows

"And that's the last I heard from him. He doesn't give a rat's ass about whether or not I got a good example of the rests they make for the good money I sent him. He already got the money, and working or not, I got *a* product, so he's happy and feels our business is complete. So now I have to find a machinist willing to fix the legs, and I'm sure that won't come cheap. Thanks, Joe. You're #1!"

You want to know something? I think this guy has gone above and beyond and has offered EXCELLENT customer contact and service! I think it is YOU that is blind to the fact that he has offered all he can to assist you. What else do you expect from him?? You are willing to keep it and have someone else fix it, yet you show a strong desire to, well, sh1t on him (and his students) and his work?

Guy, you don't like the product, he's offered a refund a number of times, and you've refused, constantly responding with details regarding your quams.

You know, I think if anything, you've opened my eyes to a great service provider, and I know where I will be getting my next rest!

I will with hold any further comments and/or suggestions that may have come to mind regarding professional/medical intervention and/or medications :)

I won't comment too much about the topic, but I also got a cowan rest and am happy with mine - but there can be "lemons" in all products. Some people have different expectations of what service they expect. I'll leave it at that but lets keep this "clean" ;).

Rimfire central is a good place to find more info about these rests.

meh.....for $200+ I was expecting something spectacular.....
That definately looks like it was made in shop class :)

Maybe it isn't thee best rest out there but I have been very impressed with mine. As clayton pointed out there are several costmetical type errors, and unfortunately there are some mechanical errors with his (I suppose I was fortuante like most others out there in that mine was mechanically very good) but it works very slick.

Comparing it to my other windage rest - caldwell rock BR it is above and beyond - really in another class. For the few extra dollars to get a cowan IMO it was well worth it. For looks it isn't as great IMO - but as clayton also pointed out cosmetically it doesn't really matter too much anyway.

Just keep in mind that there are many rests out there that are $1000 and more and are not much better than this one but also many in a similar price range that are very good - probably a tadd better (fudd, bald eagle, hoehn and sinclair's come to mind).

I will replace or repair any part of the rest free of charge -or- I will send you another rest free of charge -or- I will completely refund your money plus all shipping charges and expenses that you have encurred, including shipping for sending the rest back to me.
Joe Cowan

on NOV24 he wrote that. why would you not just pack it up right then and there and ship it back? instead you sent email after email whining about the rest.??

i see nothing wrong with the seller's attitude or handling of this

I've used Jordan's rest, and his doesn't show the same windage problem that mine does. Adjusting elevation adjusts elevation. Adjusting windage adjusts windage. One doesn't affect the other. On mine, I adjust the elevation, and the windage goes out of whack and needs to be adjusted. When I raise the elevation with the speed screw the POA also moves to the left, because the legs are in crooked. If the legs were in straight, as they are on Jordan's and probably most everyone else that's got one of these things, then adjusting elevation would only adjust elevation, just as you'd expect it to. But unfortunately mine aren't in straight. I'd be more than happy with it if it functioned properly, cosmetic damage is just that, cosmetic. But functionally, mine's defective, and he doesn't want to give me a base with straight legs, which is all I want. *shrug* It's disappointing, and I'll leave it at that.

No ####. I feel like giving this guy a negative trader rating just for starting this post.....

_SHORTY!!!!! OPEN YOUR EYES!!! As P0WERWAGON posted, Cowan IS willing to do these things!!! What are you shrugging about? What sort of dillusional world are you living in?!?? IT IS THERE IN BLACK AND WHITE!!!! You CAN get what you want, and yet at HIS expense! Mind you, with all of this back and forth wasting of his time and not being able to realize that these options that you claim are non-existant, are in fact available to you, you'd be lucky to recieve any further servicing at YOUR expense.

Man, I gotta say it....some peoples children!

PS - You might want to pass your name along to the good folks at Wolverine Supplies, TSE, Canada Ammo etc....so they know never to deal with you!

man are you blind. You just contradict yourself all the time. You just stated that all you want is a new base and you will be happy. Yet he has offered numerous times to replace it.

I can see why he does not want to be in contact with you.

No sympathy for Shorty from me. I think this had better get locked B4 it turn nasty.
